One Consumer Review of “Sony NVU94T GPS”
Review by Sonny McKenzie, November 13, 2008
Purchased unit not only for GPS but for hands free phone in car and video playback while flying. I don’t anticipate using traffic info. After minor misteps, I am now enjoying all of the features of the NV-U94T. The menu is easy to navigate and the screen graphics are sharp and clear. GPS: On start up it may take 2-3 minutes for the unit to aquire a satelite position. Also, I don’t have a lot of faith in the navigation plus feature as it won’t track beyond my first turn in the parking garage at work. I’ve loaded an 8GB Memory Stick Pro with music, photos and video. No problem with music but photos were initially a hastle. Manual states the you can playback pictures taken with a SONY camera. Problem is, you need to use the memory stick used in the camera to record the photos. I was able to get around that by renaming my “Pictures” folder in the root directory of the memory stick to “DCIM” and creating a sub-folder within DCIM named “101MSDCF”. I could then move my .jpg pictures or folders containing pictures into the 101MSDCF folder and they were viewable without problem. For video, the manual states that video should be converted to .mp4 with a resolution of 320×240, frame rate of 15fps and video rate of 384KBS. That works but the video does not fill the screen. I initially used 3GP_Converter for the 320×240 conversions but finally settled on AVS Video Converter to produce customized resolutions of 480×272 and 364×274 for aspect rations of 15×9 and 4×3 respectively. Playback quality is excellent. Hands free phone service using bluetooth is easy to set up and both the speaker sound quality and voice pickup from 3 feet away is excellent. I haven’t really used the gesture features so can’t comment on their performance. I am really pleased with the unit. Not quite as portable as a NUVI but a great unit.
