HP4710s Probook Inactive Cursor

In either email or in a word document the cursor becomes inactive while I am typing. To re-activate the cursor, I click on the mouse or click on the pad buttons at the base of the keyboard. Either way, the cursor stays on screen only temporarily. Can I make this repair myself?
