Snow Leopard causing HP printer problems

After installing snow leopard I could not access the scanner on the HP Officejet Pro 8500. Message says there is no scanner. Reinstalled HP software and could not print anything — applications ended abnormally when trying to print. Did a time machine restore to get back to where I could at least print something.
