i have the same problem !!
Same problem. My itouch first generation, very first to buy this one, no dodgy software on it. contacted Apple and they did not admit knowing about this problem. suggested to restore it but this did not work. Will be taking it into them next weekend for some answers.
Same Problem! Found no fix, seems to be Hardware related.
I also have experianced the same problem, however it coinsides with a batter life problem too. When ever i charge my Gen. 1 touch it physically heats up.
I have a picture of mine when that happened, it works fine now, but it doesn’t display the word “iPod” on my netgear router anymore, it just shows two dashes

I have taken my itouch to the apple store and showed them this problem. they claimed to not have seen this before, did not have a fix for it and could not give me any answers to what was wrong.
Their only solution was a replacement which I am currently in the process of doing through their on line service at a cost of £66.
Is this problem age dependent. mine was 2 years old when it packed in and it only had light use.
Poor show APPLE
I have the same problem, ipod touch 1st generation, have tried reset and erase settings etc, even upgraded the software. Nothing makes any difference. Gutted as have only been using it for teh past couple of months and as it’s out of warranty bit miffed if I have to pay a fortune to get it repaired or even worse buy a replacement!!
Any one anymore suggestions as to how to fix this issue??
I plan on calling them about this tomorrow and calling bullshit on everything they say… I’ve done research and found this out:
1.)while they may say they’ve never seen this problem, it’s been reported before MULTIPLE times before to their stores, so they’re trying to bullshit us.
2.) The problem lies in the download of version 2.2.1… while this version was an update, it permanently removes ALL Wi-Fi accessibility and also dramatically decreases battery life… may I also add that they knew about this little glitch AND nothing else came along with this little update?!
As you can see, I have a couple low-blows to sucker-punch these people with… if it works, I’ll post again to let you know to go all up in their faces and call bull-shit after bull-shit.
Thanks Ken, I had that problem one time months ago, and since then, my router won’t recognize my iPod as “IPOD” anymore, just two dashes, and that makes it hard for me to edit the settings for my iPod when connected, when I try to do something to my iPods connection on the router, it says “Unknown device”, but my moms and sisters iPod say IPOD-2 and IPOD-3, theirs are outdated, and mines up to the last update… ALWAYS, so… yea
Well I finally gave in and sent my 16gb itouch off for repair via there website service at a cost of 60 odd quid so I didn’t lose the engraving.
Expecting to get a refurbished first generation back, I was in shock to receive a brand new fully boxed with all accessories second generation itouch.
Is it coincidence that they have dropped the 16gb from the line up and are just getting shot of the last few or is it guilt for destroying mine.
Should I be happy with a new itouch for 60 quid or angry the old one broke allegedly through their mess up.
I am actually happy the second generation touch screen is better, less sensitive and the extra features are what I wanted and they engraved it for me. If they admit it was there cock-up then I want my money back.
I\’ve had my ipod touch for about a year now, and mind you its the second one i\’ve had due to a faulty home button, but we have recently gotten a wireless router, and i\’ve had no trouble connecting my laptop to the wifi, but its a different story on my ipod. It recognises my wifi name, but when i go to put in the password, it says \’fail to connect\’ and so im pretty annoyed at this, when i know that the passwords correct. any suggestions as to get this working or perhaps fixing this problem, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Well, Kara, I have a netgear router, and in the settings of my router, is the ability, of changing how far the radio broadcasts the wifi signals, and I use to have it on full blast, because I thought it was better, but that left many patches in the air, and my weak little iPod could not hold onto any of them for more than 10 seconds-2 minutes, and sometimes couldn’t even grab the signal, and so I lowered it down to the lowest broadcast and all computers can still get the signal, I just can’t go 120 feet outside my house again in my big yard, but my iPod has no problem connecting anymore
okay same thing happened with my 2nd gen and i’m pissed!!!!
i noticed it when all my music was gone!
i had all my apps and photos but that was it!
apple owes me 300 for the songs i had bought!
my ipod is in great condition minus one tiny crack
i bought a warranty but that ran out last weekend fml!
