My Sony PS3 is not reading the disk, I have the 2.60 firmware and it just stopped reading yesterday. I have been told it will cost $150 to fix.
Has anyone else got disc reading problems with their playstation 3? Any help please.

I am having the same problem. The playstation stays on the menu screen and will not read any game, DVD, or Blue Ray. A few times it looked like a DVD was going to start but then the screen goes black. Is this the same problem that you are having? Most forums that I have checked out show that the only way to get it resolved is to send it back to Sony to get fixed or replaced. This can be done if you have the receipt or if it is still under warranty which is neither for me. Have you found any solutions? Please let me know.
have you tried deleting the game from saved game utility and reloading it again.this is similar to the problem my son had .I wrote in with the prob on the 18th of feb.Hope it works for you.Arran.
My Ps3 40gb Stopped reading disks but just ps3 games I didn’t try blu ray movie but normal dvds and ps1 games still work
I have the sam problem and do not know what to do one minute i was playing Cod4 online my bro turned it off and now it does not read the games blu ray and dvd works still but the games dont help me please
i have this problem with reading blue rays. but i go on to a demo and press the ps button which takes you to the xmb menu and then my disic pops up and i select it this way. you should try it. it might work
I have the same problem too, I just got it to 2.70 a couple weeks ago, and while I was playing Resident evil 5, it froze, and I turned off my PS3 and turned it on again, then it couldnt read anymore discs, not cd’s, dvds, or blu ray or anything, I tried Reformatting the hdd and the whole ps3, but it still didnt work, please somebody, tell me how to fix this, i really want to play again.
im having the same prob. sony is full of u know what. it doesnt make sense how something they did, penalizes us and then suggest, “you’ll have to send it in to be seviced” which is 150.00 plus shipping and other ridiculus charges. 2.70 update has caused alot of people problems from what ive been able to research in these last couple of days, there should be something we can do.
My PlayStation was also working fine the night before . The next morning I decided to get online and play cod4 but I was REQUIRED to install the latest update before I could do anything, so like a loyal and faithful sony playstation user I did and the update …….installed fine, no broken connection, no errors etc… but on power up the disc would not load I diligently cleaned the disc and even tried another with no result. I know it was the update what else could it have been? one minute its fine the next no game play! sony needs to resolve this issue and quickly every effort made on my part to contact sony has resulted in the standard ” your playstation will have to be serviced” yeah so I can pay them to fix what they themselfs broke?
this has happend to me, i put in the game and it will work for a bit then it will just cut out then will not play games at all, i have heard that this is a commen prob with the 60gig ps3s. i have rang sony and it is going to cost me £150 to get a new 1 sent out, had to pay as it is over a year old,
i have had my ps3 for almost a year and i think sometime around christmas it just stopped reading all disc and dvds and even blue-ray disc when i turned off the system and turned it back on and idk if it was because i was online playing nfs prostreet and got the ps3 update or what so i don’t know what to do so if anyone can help me please help. because sony better do somthing about it because that is wrong that they wont do nothing at all, or even try to help but instead we have to pay $150 plus extra after we spent about $600 for a system. And they can do what they want to do but just for the record thats messed up because everyone like sony but we have to pay money for something they made and the updates they gave us.
hi i have the problem as well my game icon wont show up but it still plays movie disks i dont have bluray movies to try any help email me swingja.boy@hotmail.com
hi it is me again i fixed that problem after i typed the message all i did was restroed my ps3 go quick restore but copy all ur save data if u cant save it goto this website http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps3/save/938583.html and type it in the top i am very happy i didnt need to buy a new one
Wow when i got this problem i thought i would be the only one….sony needs to do something about this or they can kiss all these supporters goodbye. There is no reason a $400-$600 piece of equipement breaks in under 2 years…shame on you sony……SHAME!!!!!
im having same problem as everyone else.. Blu rays and ps3 games dont work ps1 and ps2 games work fine… its either the 2.6 update or the systems were built with faulty blu ray lenses
did some research for everyone… if you purchased your ps3 late 2007 early 2008.. theres a chance you bought one with faulty blu ray disc.. diodes burn out.. reason why was the huge damand for xmas gifts and a mass productions of shitty products.. playstaion will fix for 150 bucks.. hmmm so i spent 600 and you want 150 to fix something that was your fualt in the beginning?? making any sense to anyone?THANK YOU SONY!!!
PHEEEEEW!
I had the same problem everyone else is having/had; my PS3 just stopped reading discs, when I put something in nothing would show up.
Well I reformatted the system: nothing.
Turned it on and off a few times, with or without the discs in: nothing.
but then when I tried to log into the playstation store, my PS3 froze on me. So I reset it, then all of a sudden… VOILA, disc is read and PS3 works beautifully.
Maybe I just got lucky? (but boy do I feel relieved)
My point is, it could be a software problem and not a hardware one (like diodes burning out). You should try a full format, or if you want, trying to lock it up in some odd way like I did
I have had this happen TWICE!! The first time was under warranty, but now it happened again and it is not under warranty. I sent them an email and i am waiting for a reply. They say the ps3 will last 10 years! I haven’t had 1 last more than a year. We should unleash the powert of the internet on sony!
Hi all
I am the mother and wife of two very unhappy boys at the moment. and I am hoping somebody here will be able to help me fix their PS3.
My son is a huge fan of COD and has recently started playing COD4 again (in preperation for the new one coming out i guess) anyway we needed to perform an update and since then the PS3 has been a nightmare. First it said it was corrupted so we fixed that but now its not even showing the disk s being in the system, we have a icon at the top right of the screen which makes it look like it’s doing something but NOTHING happens. I bought this 60gb PS3 in December 2007 so out of warranty and dont want to spend a fortune on getting it fixed but I guess I will have to (their faces are sooo sad!!).
Any help greatfully received as I am a complete technophobe and dont have a clue!
Thanks
Kelly
to Kelly:
I’ve read your problem somewhere before, and I think to fix it, is to turn off the ps3 (but make sure the red light is on) hold the power button until the PS3 turns on then off, Press the power button again, and make sure you hear 2 beeps, when you do, quickly take your finger off the power button and choose 1 of either the 6 options, one of them will fix it, or i think if you play a demo, hold the ps button until the xmb pops up, that might work.
I have sent in my PS3 3 times to be repaired now. The first time, fortunately, was under 1 year warranty. Could not read any disks. Got it fixed for free. When the Sony Svc Center repairs it, you get a 90 day warranty. Unfortunately for me, the system had the same issue 4 months after I got it back so I had to pay $150 to get it repaired. This time (just mailed it today), the system doesnt turn on at all. Exactly 100 days after it was repaired the last time. I was told they would not charge me to get repaired which was nice of them but it remains to be seen. Spent $500 for the console, so far have spent 150 to get it repaired. I cannot see myself spending another 150! That would mean I would have spent $800 in 2 years!!!
several months ago i did the update and ps3 stopped reading dvds. was definitely result of the update.
we are having the same problems games and dvds stop working we call . i got this for my husband on fathers day in 2007 spent about 800dollars on it called sony and they said this is rare . so everyone needs to call and complain about it .this all sonys fault. it should not mess up this fast.same on sony.
sorry i meant i call sony and complained they were talking about 150dollars .so everyone needs to call and complain.
OK.. I played guitar hero metallica..I played the song: wherever I may roam, but suddenly the screen froze and I had to turn the ps3 off. When I turned it on the disk wouldn’t show up. I tried to take the disk in and out but nothing happened. It’s a loading bubble in the top right corner but nothing never happens, please help!!!!
Had the same issues twice. Your best bet is to send it in to SCEA for repair. Takes about 2 weeks with shipping and return. If not covered by warranty, you will definitely pay $150. After you get it back, you will be covered for 90 days after that. If you have unresolved issues again after the 90 days expire you will pay $150 to SCEA again unfortunately. Sony’s take is that with over 20 million units sold but this issue only happening to a few (I think more than a few), they are not going to recall. Obviously sales of new PS3’s will be affected if they recall. But if more folks complain or blog about it, it may affect sales anyway and they will recognize there are issues with the PS3.
ok i have the answer.go to system settings and restore default settings.u will go thru all that bs of selecting a time zones and such but when youre done im assuming it gets rid of past updates and it worked for me.
Same problem guys, phoned Sony today they want £99 to fix it as mine is 22 months old, told them I’m not willing to pay and want to escalate to complaints procedure, would’nt you know all managers too busy to come to phone (probably busy dealing with complaints about faulty PS3’s) waiting for a call back! I am a member of Which? so will be taking advice from them too.
new ps3 of amazon dont read disx email me if u figure out y
just picked up a 2nd hand PS3 today - July 18th 2009.
won’t play Blue ray discs - it never even registers in the menu when you put it in.
PS2 games work fine, and so do PS3 games.
i really think SONY must offer a free repair otherwise al the hard work they spend on marketing their products will go to the wall if they don’t lok after their customers.
I know a few things about consoles after 25 years but this problem has totally stumped me! - there are so many ways of trying to fix this problem on the forums on tinternet …… if anyone from SONY UK reading this can you post somehting on your website or reply to me at richard@hopley.co.uk please??/??
I’ve just tried something I read elsewhere on another forum and it worked.
Put your game disc into the drive
Load a demo game or game from hard drive
Press the PS button
Select option to quit game
You will be taken back to main menu where you should now see the game disc listed
Its not ideal, but its a work-around so at least you can load your games.
Best of luck
Lisa
Well I have tried everything nothing works. My PS2 games and dvds work like a charm but my PS3 and blurays do not. Would do the work around as posted before, but I restored my ps3 hoping to cure what ailed it. Just downloaded the newest update still nada. Looks like I got a very expensive ps2/dvd player.
Sony officially sucks may you go under in this economy! No way am I paying $150 for repairs/service. I did nothing wrong except buy their stupid machine and download the updates!
Anyone experiencing the same problem (not reading games/movies/freezing etc.) e-mail me at: fixps3@yahoo.com - Please email me with the following:
Name?
State/Country you’re in?
What model PS3 you own? (40-80GB)
When was it purchased?
When the problem began?
I have contacted an attorney who is interested so pass the word on. It may work out that with enough folks on board, we can approach Sony without starting a legal suit (they hate the publicity), and have our problems resolved.
man that’s such garbage… people who had this problem twice have basically paid for a new ps3 almost but are still getting an old one with problems…
I tried the demo/dl’ed game and back out to menu thing, but that didn’t work for me. I have a 40gb that plays no disc based media of any kind anymore… weak.
Put your game disc into the drive
Load a demo game or game from hard drive
Press the PS button
Select option to quit game
You will be taken back to main menu where you should now see the game disc listed
Its not ideal, but its a work-around so at least you can load your games.
David : California : 80gb PS3 : Purchased around June 1st, 2009 : Problems started about when I posted above, June 11th
I ended up sending it in for repairs because it wouldn’t recognize that discs were inserted. It cost me $150 bucks because I’d gotten it from a third party on Amazon.
I had the same thing happen to mine Ps3 not even 2 years old and now it will not play anything after I did some dumb update that sony put in there I got an error Hard drive has been corrupted and is resetting. Called and argued with Sony for oven an hour and still have to pay 150.00 for their mistake but I should have read the disclaimer that came with the update Do at your own risk is what they told me, where was this disclaimer? Everyone needs to put a complain to the Better Business Bureau and tell them what is going on, Sony need to fix this on their own expense for their mistakes not us
I’ve had my Xbox 360 fail twice in under 4 years. That’s a life span of two years @ $300.00 each time. I was going to switch over to PS3, even set up account today, but after reading these problems I will not. Screw the both- Microsoft and Sony both suck. I’ll use my $399.99 for something better. Maybe watch some pay per view or something… it’ll last longer than either of these systems. Piss off Microsoft and piss off Sony.
to marc:
hey, if you got a ‘hard drive error’ and not a ‘disc read error’ you should have just gotten a new hard drive. you could get a 500gb hdd for about a $100 instead of them “fixing” it for you.
But nevertheless, their firmware updates shouldn’t cause fatal hardware errors. What do they expect us to do? Of course most people are going to want to get the newest edition of their software, and there’s no way of testing it to see if it won’t cause problems (besides waiting and watching if others get problems like us).
i was playing cod4 online on my ps3 and suddenly the game froze and i tried to quit the gam by pressing the ps button but the nothing worked i tried to turn the system off by holding on the turn off button on the ps3 and it still didnt turn off i pulled the wire chord from the ps3 then put it it back then turned the ps3 on and when i try to put a cd it doesnt read the disk…from the comment i read above is Restore the ps3 system im doing that now and hope it will work…if it didnt what should i do?? HELP ME
@Rakan
One thing (i can’t remember if I read here or somewhere else) is to check if the motor is still working by putting in a disk (and REMEMBER how the label is oriented when you put it in) let it sit a little while, and then eject the disk. See if the label is in the same position that it was when you put it in. If you try it a few times and it always comes out in the same position you put it in, then it probably isn’t spinning and that’s a sign the motor is either broken or not starting for some reason.
If it doesn’t look like the motor is broken, then I’d say you should test different media- a few different games, dvds, and blu-rays if you have some to test with. The first time mine broke it was ONLY failing to play blu-rays (so, games and movies) but it played DVDs fine… second time it broke it was the motor.
Either way, the easiest way to fix is contacting sony (and if you’re out of warranty you’ll have to pay), but at least if you know more about what went wrong you can look at your options like buying a replacement drive from somewhere, or fixing yourself if you are confident enough to do that.
Hope it helps
@TG
thands very much TG i did what u said and the disk doesnt spin it is the samyway when i put it in so when i gace it to sony they said the motor was brocken thans very much
My friend has a 2006 model PS3 and we had the problem for years. So we set it aside. So now trying again with the 3.0 Update we can View DvD’s only. Games and Blu Ray wont load. So does anyone have any suggestions?
did the 3.0 update and still wont play dvds. odd thing is cd music works and so do mlb08 game, also the demo blueray disk plays just fine.
won’t recognise all my dvd disk
same problem for me… the motor is working but it not reading any disk i reformated it i tryed many things please tell me what to do btw i called sony they told me to send them the ps3 console and they would repair for 170$ im out of warranty but im like cmon it not my fault if your machine have problems… anyways please help thanks
I have done the latest update recently. I was playing Arkham Asylum last night and the game froze. I tried to quit via PS button, nothing happened. I held the power button, nothing happened. So I turned it off from behind the machine. I have gone to it today and it is not reading any disks. PS3 or DVD. I am now reformatting the hard drive but think either my motor is broken or the diodes have burnt out. Either way, I’m out of my warranty and do not want to be paying £99 for repairs, when the same thing may happen in another 6 months. I may as well just buy a new PS3. Any suggestions.
Exact same thing happend to me when I was playing arkham asylum. I had just done the latest update too. Let me know how reformating the hard drive works. I don’t want to have to send it back and pay for repairs. I read online that maybe the lens on the blu ray player needs to be cleaned. I might try that.
Reformatting never worked for me. The disks are not even spinning when I put them in. The load icon at the top right corner is trying to do something though.
Mine is the same way. I found this website about the disc not spinning.
http://www.fixya.com/support/t518147-ps3_not_spinning_disk
Some one else in the posts recommends buying and replacing the part at the link below. It looks like you gotta know what you are doing to replace it though.

Same BS is happening to me. HAD to do the update in order to play the new Guitar Hero 5. It played okay for a while and then it would freeze in the middle of songs. I was able to push the power button when it was off until it beeped twice (I guess that resets it). That seemed to work a couple of times. Now…. nothing. I did a back-up and I am currently doing a FULL restore (it’s going to take almost 5 hours) and hopefully that will work. I’ve already been in contact with Sony because my system is still under warranty. But, from what I’ve read on here, it seems like the update may be the cause. If so, that’s complete bulls****!!!!! Especially for people who are out of warranty. I hope that everybody gets their money back if it’s found that Sony is responsible for all of this chaos. Good luck to everybody! I’ll post my results!
are people really finding that the update is the problem? Cuz on mine, I hadn’t even done the 3.0 update and it still happened. I wonder if they’re two different problems. I never experienced freezing or anything, for me it was just like one day everything worked fine, next day it wouldn’t read any discs, motor wouldn’t spin.
I didn’t touch it, move it, or anything in between….
I have got a 40GB ps3 and ever since firmware update 3.0 my console has never worked right it wont read any format of disk. I updated to 3.01 and this did not fix the problem now i either have to pay £250 for the new one or £128 for one that has been refurbished. Does anyone know a fix for this! If so plz help i can’t take this anymore had this problem for 6 weeks now!!! Bored out of my head but so annoyed with sony at there poor lack for customer service all you do is ring them up and they say “BUY REFURBISHED ONE” what a load of s***.
Screw Sony. The warrenty I had lasted until a few days ago, and then it broke today. Isn’t that fantastic? There are too many people complaining that their ps3 is breaking on them.
Email this guy with the following info. He’s taking it to court.
Name
What model ps3 (40-80gb)
When it was purchased
When the problem began
Just take the time to do this. I sure as hell don’t want to pay money for their mistake. :S Who knows… maybe they’ll do a recall!!!
i have the exact same problem. the disc is inserted but it wont spin or read it. i think its lame that sony is charging so much for this when its clearly not our fault… it obvious a production error or something…
through research online i found the laser had gone out in the blue ray player. I purchased a new one online and replaced it and it works now.
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3updates&thread.id=9361&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
havent played the system in three months due to training. came back and the ps3 wont read games. movies and music work, but not games. not paying half the price of a new one for a repair, so im going to crack it open and see whats going on.
I had similar problems, i was playing COD4 on enight and shut down after playing, next day it would not play BLU RAYS or GAMES — just did not show them as being there at all when i insreted the disc….. 3 months of not using it and saw hints on this forum from ■Lisa on August 8th, 2009 6:55 am…. and ITS WORKING !!
Basically I load up Play TV as I had that already installed rather than a demo game, when it has loaded press the PS button, and when it gets to the main PS3 menu ( xmd ) the Game is right there in the column…. then click on it and it closes down Play TV and opens up the game!
Checked it with Blu Ray too and under videos there it is, it must be the updates that the online gaming forces you to download…. my system says i have the mosy up to date software so will have to wait for the next update to see if that fix’s the issue.
AWESOME, THANKS FOR HELPING ME OUT !!
I just had the system go out on me, not reading any disc. Ofcourse, with my luck my warranty went out two weeks ago, I tried a quick reformat with no success. Now I’m restoring everything which is a hassle. Dealing with Sony is a nightmare it will cost $150 to fix. $399 for the console and another $150 to repair it after 1 year and 2 weeks? That’s a scam, times are tough can’t spend money like that. Pissing me Off!
I’ve been gaming for many, many years and have seen the rise of the console since the early Binatone days to the crap that comes out now. It seems the more advanced the systems become, the more prone to failure they are.
It’s high time the consumer had control again. I for one will contact that dude who’s doing the class action lawsuit coz I’m sick and tired of this this!! (anagram).
same thing happened to me ive had enough!!! this is the second time now, i give up. i gonna get an xbox bin messed about too much by sony so now someone else will recieve my money, ps i have a written to watchdog on tv and they tell me they have recieved many of the same complaints now they researching the story so looks like sony are gonna be shown up for the greedy fatcat rip off merchants that they are and im sure this will help stave off a christmas rush for anything sony, they have only themselves to blame!!!!!!
i borrowed my cousin’s ps3 about a month ago. I mistakingly left call of duty 4 on for hours; about 16-20 hours. I went back to the console and presumed to play COD4. I entered a team deathmatch game and it froze on the screen that says “awaiting connection…0…” i went to go and turn the ps3 off. nothing worked. i tried to eject the game, still no response from the ps3. then the system restarted after a few minutes and the game did not show up on the menu screen, but it was still in the console. I ejected the game and re-inserted it, but it was no help. i even tried grand theft auto, and that did not work either. I know the warranty it far passed because my cousin has had the system for years. I will try resetting, reformatting et al. and will respond back here with a follow up. Good luck everyone.
My PS3 just stop reading all disks this weekend. My Ps3 is only 20 months old (bought in Dec. 2009 60gb model), less than two years old. I begin to question Sony sells us shoddy products (aka. Ps3). I see there are many people with the same problem with their blu-ray disk reader. I too, called Sony and they too say I will have to pay $150, which is half of the price of the new slim and bigger HD (120GB), to fix it. The repair cost is just too high. They should either lower the service cost.
I recently pop in MGS4 into my ps3 and played for about a hour. I then stopped playing the game and tried to go online which it told me I had to update my software to 3.01. After I downloaded the 3.01 into my 60g I attempted to play MGS4 again, however it didn’t load or read and I didn’t even see the disk icon on the menu screen. I called sony and they try trouble shooting it but that didn’t work. Sony said that its a problem that needs to be fix and it will cost me 150.00 to get it done, even after I told them that it was working fine before the download, Sony stated that the download was a new software created to fix the problems that 3.00 had cause to other ps3, and that it was a bad wireless connection that possibly cause my ps3 to stop working correctly. So now Sony is blaming the wifi for the disk issue.
An artical from GameSpot about the malfunction through the new system updates realesed on the PS3.

Good, I am glad somebody has the money to hire an attorney and go after these bad guys. They are crooks for taking money to fix something they broke. Hopefully they will have to fix everyone of our systems for free, and repay all the money spent to those already paid up.
Is it not time a bunch of us got together and sued sony? This is unacceptable! We bought a ps3 in Sept stopped reading disks in november it was still under warrenty sent it back they replaced the hard drive. Died again in January - sent it back , they replaced the hard drive. Died again in April - B****ED , sent it back they replaced the unit with a refurbished one :(. Died again in September - out of warrenty was told by a sony represenitive i would be better off to buy a new one because they are going down in price then to try and fix this one again! WTF we have had our ps2 for 6 years and it has never quit. Something is up and its time people started to complain!!!! BTW replaced the harddrive myself now that i have no warrenty and still not reading disks , next step is the laser
I agree with Rich. I was playing Oblivion (which I bought today) as a game to just sit and play in my downtime w/ MW2. Got about 10 minutes into the game, it froze. Shut off the POS and it wont even read the disk on the home menu. Working reformatting the whole thing right now, but I doubt that will work. Called Sony, told me the same cost of 150. I hope these guys stick it to Sony. No reason the stupid thing still works but doesn’t perform the functions it is designed to perform. Still undecided if I am going to spend the 150, or buy a new one for 300. At least with the 300, I get a one year warranty…
i have had the same problem as you all.. had the ps3 since 2008 and all of a sudden this morning it wont read any discs no films games nothing. i tried all the solutions posted on here with no luck.
just wanted to let you know i called sony they want £99 to repair something i believe was caused by an update the MAKE you install.
result of this i have just reported them to bbc watchdog!!!
so please any of you guys from the uk report them to bbc watchdog if they receive enough complaints we may be able to get this problem resolved .
http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog/gotastory/
I reported my issues with the Better Business Beurea
Just heard that a ps3 update is looking a bit more definite. Apparently some screenshots which had facebook on the ps3 were on the ps3 UK website but then pulled off very quickly.
there is loads of info on watchdog they took it up with sony and they dont care said its only a small number of people (2.5 million people in same boat as us) they offer a refurb ps3 you can buy from them for £125 or they will repair the one you have for £99 any one else feel like sony is sticking 2 fingers up to us all?
I just got my netflix streaming dvd, and when I inserted it everything worked fine. I then watched a movie and left it on pause because I had to leave, and when I came back I hit the play button and it stood in the “retrieving” process for 45+ minutes. Then I quit the disc to go to the PS3 Startup Menu and I tried to start up netflix again by clicking on the netflix dvd icon, it tried to start up (going black screen) after that None of the buttons worked, it froze. The eject button did not work, neither the power button. So I turned it off by using the switch in the back. Then I let it sit for awhile and when I tried to start it back up I ejected and re inserted the disc back in, and it would not read it. Nothing would show up. I then tried to insert a regular DVD and same thing it would not load up or even show up on the menu. I tried it with a Blu-Ray disc and the same thing. Whats wrong? Will a “restore default settings” or a “restore system” fix this. Please help.
Think your on a about the yellow light of death mate different matter completely. Cause i have not heard anything from watchdog on this matter!
Same frickin problem here!! Played Assassin’s Creed for 3 days straight, first disc kept freezing. Exchanged that disc for a new one, played the game for an hour, froze again…turned off PS3 and turned it back on….no more disc reads….$500 dwn the drain. me = PISSED!! thnx sony
had a problem where my ps3 couldnt read my games, got a bit freaked out and done my research online, found out that trying other media format for example music cd or a dvd may work so i tried a dvd first, it didnt work…i was gonna give up but then i thought let me try a cd…it worked. put a dvd in and it worked. then i tried a game, the moment of truth. it took a while to load……..success. it worked.
so try inserting other media format it might work. Hope this helps
