PS3 40gb 2.60 firmware, stopped reading any disc

After downloading the new 2.60 version, our PS3 stopped reading any disc, CD, DVD, Games and Bluray. Im now arguing with Sony, as the guarantee was gone the 9th jan, that as the update caused the problem it is not our fault! is there possibly another way to solve it?

Have a 60Gb model and having the same problem. Shortly after downloading update 2.60, Resistance 2 started freezing. Now my PS3 won’t read any DVD, Blu Ray etc. I’ve formatted the hard drive and still no joy. I’m gutted but doubt Sony will do anything about it.

60GB model doing the same thing. I am really irritated.

  6. Dan on February 11th, 2009 3:06 am

I have the same problem after the download. My 40 GB just stopped playing games, DVD’s, and BD’s. The restore puts it back to v2.60. I was hoping it would go back to v1.0. It’s 14 months old and rarely used. I bought it to play movies. Sony tells me to send it in for repair at my cost of $157. No thanks, that’s good money after bad. I’ll never buy another Sony product. They’re junk.

  7. steve on February 16th, 2009 6:28 pm

i bought my ps3 60gb on release day. iv had no problems until i downloaded the update 2.60.when i put a film in of any description-ie dvd,blu ray it shows the icon that there is a film in the machine. go to play it and i get just a blank screen. some games have started to freeze too.

  8. Sameer on February 16th, 2009 7:45 pm

I have the same problem, luckily I’m in warranty. 40gb g01 system. I just filed an official complaint. At first they denied there was any problem. Eventually after talking for a half hour and just telling them how this is dishonest they stopped responding.

  11. Julian on February 23rd, 2009 10:04 am

My 40GB has just done the same thing.
It doesn’t sound as though it’s even trying to spin the disk.

  12. Julian on February 23rd, 2009 1:26 pm

Just been searching around for similar problems and found one thing that may be worth trying … the “recovery console”.
Not sure about the rules about posting links, but if you go to community.eu.playstation.com and search for “If your ps3 is not reading disks” then take a look at the first post.
I’ll be trying it when I get home tonight.

  13. JB on February 28th, 2009 8:09 pm

Same thing just happened to my ps3 it was working fine yesterday until i decided to go online and get the update( dumb move) then when i tried to insert any disc it doesnt read it wtf is wrong with the Ps3. I tried to restore the ps3 but v 2.60 was still installed on the system anyone had a solution to this other than sending it back to sony??

  14. darietti on March 2nd, 2009 6:22 pm

Hello from Spain, same problem with 40GB model after 2.60 update: stopped reading disks (games, DVDs, CDs…). It’s like if the disk wasn’t in the console…

  15. Julian on March 2nd, 2009 8:58 pm

Update …. tried all the things mentioned in my previous post, but didn’t work.
Contacted Sony and without any fuss they organised a repair and it was picked up last Friday.
    Now waiting for it’s return.

  16. Lindsay on March 3rd, 2009 2:59 am

Julian: Were you under warranty? When I called Sony, they told me it was just a big coincidence that my discs stopped working right after the firmware update and to send them $150 to get it fixed.

  17. Julian on March 3rd, 2009 9:43 am

I actually bought my PS3 off of Ebay around October 2008, so I wasn’t sure when it was originally purchased. Although IIRC the advert said it was only a few months old, whatever a “few” means on Ebay :-)
When I rang Sony (UK) I told them my son was given it for his birthday in May, and that I couldn’t be sure of the actual date for the warranty. He didn’t seem too bothered and took most of my other details first before asking for the serial number.
Googling for “ps3 firmware 2.6 error” then page 2 shows a few interesting threads. Reading between the lines it appears that Sony are saying it’s just a coincidence. People tend to use them more just after an update and it’s just the normal failure rate … but just with more people using them.

  18. Toby aa sorensen on March 3rd, 2009 5:53 pm

its the disc-drive….. for average use it will survive for about 1 -3 years

my ps3 is i out of order and thats after 14 months :-( thank you sony :-(

  19. Lee on March 7th, 2009 5:39 pm

right so if i buy a new hard drive should my ps3 read discs again then cause i’ve wiped the harddrive?

  20. Mani on March 8th, 2009 8:54 am

My PS3 after the latest firmware update stopped playing any DVD/Blu-ray discs. I am really mad at Sony for not Quality testing the updates. How can an established manufacturer have these “silly” issues? Sony fix this or else… there will be a massive public PR campaign against SONY.

  21. Mani on March 8th, 2009 8:55 am

    On I forgot. Mine is a 80GB PS3 (purchased July 2008) model

  22. Miles on March 8th, 2009 5:05 pm

Same thing happened to me did the update the other day, tried to play a dvd today nothing, tried loadind a dvd data disc i used the other day same thing,

Was about to call Sony to “calmly” voice my concerns when i tried turning off system and turned back on, held power button till the system beeped, after resetting the display settings, and system loaded, i tried a dvds and dvd roms, it is now working again hope this helps with your system too

After reporting on the ite of my ps3 having the same problems, i attempted all i could within my limits and i thought i would have to buy a new one as i had no warranty or receipt. Yesterday, i phoned sony expecting them to say they couldn’t do anything and ill have to send it in and get it repaired for a lot of money. Well, suprisingly i got the opposite, the man apoligised about my problems then ordered me a brand new 80gb ps3 for FREE of charge. It will be arriving tomorrow.
    SONY ARE F****** AWESOME MANN!
If you haven’t already email sony about your problem here is their email address tell them of your problem and wait around 3-4 days for a reply. The email is

Hope everyone reads this. I’m completely done with ps3 and it’s crap. I’m going to the local gaming store soon to buy an xbox360. I’m going to trade all the games i own from playstation 3 and get the same ones only for xbox. I’m done with sony.

  31. steve on March 14th, 2009 9:02 pm

Mine crashed after mission 1 of killzone 2. Switched off and went to bed. Tried it tonight and it loaded the killzone game up until the point where it was loading the map. Froze so i rebooted and now the drive is toast. Wont do a damn thing, im 3 weeks outside my warranty

  32. Sebastian on March 19th, 2009 6:38 am

my 40gb did the same thing but way after the 2.6 update. I fix it myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!
is a corrupt file problem….so do this…go to youtube and search “How to get the Recovery Menu on your PS3″ repeat this steps on your system, and select option 3, please do not select any other since it will wipe all you data. this will fix all corrupted files and your PS3 will read all disk and wont freeze. Good Luck

  33. Mikey on March 20th, 2009 2:12 pm

Hey lads and lasses, same thing just happened last night to my 40GB.

PS3 told me an ‘update’ was available for Fifa 09, it froze during a match (not online, just multiplayer) screen went black, re-booted and now nothing, won’t read any game, DVD or CD. Just does the spinning disc icon in the top right hand corner. Judging by peoples reactions it’s pointless asking Sony to do anything about it.

And yes, mine too is just 1 month outside the warrenty.

  34. John on March 21st, 2009 12:39 am

    Hey All,
40gb Ps3 just stopped reading all discs in the middle of loading a Street Fighter 4 level. I tired vacuuming out the dust, turning it off via the rear switch, unplugging it, all to no avail. I’m going to see if I can store my data and a format will help to determine if it’s the 2.6 firmware or the disc drive itself and then I’m calling Sony. This is my first issue with PS3, but if they don’t handle this right I won’t buy another Sony console.

  35. John on March 21st, 2009 2:58 pm

Update: After a 3 hour format and restoring the PS3 it still won’t read any discs. I called Sony and I am three months out of the 1-year warranty which means I have to pay $150 for them to fix it even though it is entirely their crappy manufacturing system’s fault. I am so jaded with Sony now. I’m going to get this fixed and sell the PS3 as soon as it comes back. I hope I get it back before they announce any price cut. I won’t be buying a PS4.

  36. Karl on March 24th, 2009 2:05 am

I have an 80gb Motorstorm bundle PS3, and after the 2.60 update, my system would not read any games/bluray discs. If i work hard enough, i can get a BR disc to appear in the XMB, but i’ll always get a game load error or the game will load but then freeze after a few seconds and i’ll have to force-shutdown the console.
I’ve never had any problems whatsoever before this update.

  37. jack on March 24th, 2009 12:21 pm

try goin on to a demo and press the ps button so the xmb menu comes up and the disic may load up but only wen u go on to the demos

“try goin on to a demo and press the ps button so the xmb menu comes up and the disic may load up but only wen u go on to the demos”

I don’t believe it but that works for me. Cheers.

My sons 60GB PS3 has been on the way out for the past 4 weeks. Finally gave up the ghost yesterday and will no longer read/play any Games. Bought from Empire Direct Dec 07 so allegedly out of Manufacturers warranty. After arguing with a rep on the Playstation helpline told him I wanted to speak to a supervisor who rang me back this morning. Explained to the supervisor that I knew my consumer rights - “For up to Six years after purchase, purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement).” The upshot is that they have agreed to replace my sons PS3 via courier free of charge next week. So do not back down and know your rights. Playstation number is - 08705998877 option 1, option 1.

  40. Terrania on April 2nd, 2009 5:40 am

    I’m using the 80GB PS3,

I’ve read many post in few sites which express their concern over this matter, and I must admit that it scared the s**t out of me….

Somehow I managed to muster enough courage to install the FW 2.60 yesterday, and fortunately everything went well. Thanks to you guys who made me aware of potential problems and prompt me to make precautions.

These are some precautions I took to minimize my risks :

    1. Updating the FW via USB, since wireless or LAN update have risks of corrupted / interrupted data.

    2. Downloaded the FW 2.60 from the official site (many other sites provided this FW, but I chose to download form official site).

    3. Downloaded 2 times and compared the size of those 2 files to make sure no data corruption occured (this is important since I suspect the PS3 never verify the integiry of the FW installed into it).

    4. Perhaps I should use UPS when updating firmware, but I dont have any… so I just pray to God there will be no blackout during updating.

    5. I Did not chose to atumatically shut down the system after finishing updating FW. And the update process takes less than 10 minutes (or maybe even less than 5 minutes…. the progress bar move slowly at first but suddenly speed up after more than 60%).

For those who can still access the XMB, I would recommend to re-install the FW using uncorrupted file

I’m using windows XP, and in properties the file was stated :

    Size : 138 MB (145,394,063 bytes).
Size on Disk : 138 MB (145,395,712 bytes).

If you cant re-install the FW, please try the access the system restore menu and choose option number 3 (other option may wipe out the entire hardisk, so becareful). There are 50/50 chance that this alone will solve your problem. but if this doesn’t work, please try to reinstall the FW with uncorrupted file.

Hope you can all smile happily after trying it…. my condolences for those who dont.

Ok I just got off the phone with Sony. They told me that nobody else called about the problem about the frame ware update. They told me that it was a hardware problem and that I had to fix it costing me 150 dollars. I found it bull considering that all you other guys are having the same problems. If enough of you guys call in sony and tell them the problems that you are having then maybe they will fix the problem. Here is the number to call them 800-345-7669 (800-345-SONY). I would really appreciate if you guys can help me out.

  42. barry on May 1st, 2009 7:17 pm

same problem. have 60GB PS3 bought 22 months ago so out of warranty.
system would freeze between levels last weekend and tonight just died. it won;t read blu ray films or games. plays dvds and cds fine. just called sony and they want £145 to replace the system. they are having a laugh. trying a system reset now. will try the loading demo trick too.
if that doesn’t work i’m really not going to be happy.

i have 40gb ps3..now my problem is that when i play any game on the system everythin is fine till like couple of minutes after it jus stops readin it…im still playin the game nd everythin but wen i quit the game or finish the game thats wen it freezes and cant even turn off the ps3, it jus stay black screen…

  46. rich on June 22nd, 2009 5:58 pm

several months ago i did the update and ps3 stopped readi dvds. was definitely result of the update.

  47. Fanboy Raiden on June 24th, 2009 6:15 pm

Just quit the game when the game is paused not during gameplay then it will go to the xmb fine.It hangs bcoz Ps3 sometimes hardly multitask when most of its memory is used in gameplay and quit game then force the ps3 to hang as it doesnt have enough memory to use and crash without returing to xmb.I am using my ps3 for 7 months now and its the 40gb.I updated the ps3 to 2.60fw several months and it ran fine no other issues.
PS:I updated the ps3 via pendrive and downloaded from sony’s official site.

  48. garced on June 25th, 2009 2:52 am

Im having that problem but with the new update 2.80 and i had that same problem with my other ps3 on 2.60… They really need to do something to fix that, their updates are not really helping.

  49. dizhu on July 4th, 2009 10:31 pm

Well, same thing after upgrading to 2.80. Stop reading any discs. Found this place and my fellow poor souls. Called Sony and they absolutely denied any wrong. Have to to pay $150 to get it fixed. I am done with Sony. No more business from me any more.

  50. barry on July 7th, 2009 2:26 pm

@ dizhu. Not sure if you have the continous play service in the states (guessing that’s where you are judging by the dollar sign). You should be able to sign up for the continous play service c.$5 per month and make a claim. Sony will send you a refurbed unit via a courier. It’s a good service. Reading between the lines I guess Sony realise there hardware has a fault and are making it reasonably easy for people to get the problem rectified.
    Good luck.

  53. Guilherme on July 18th, 2009 2:58 pm

    Hi,
    I’m from Brazil.
Bought prototype and the game asked me to update the ps3.
Updated to 2.80 and all games, BR and DVDs stoped working.
The old version was under 2.60 and everything was just fine.
Tried all the ideas listed here, but nothing is working.
second time in 1.5 years the PS3 is broken.
And I never noticed any change in the games from one version to the next.
I was lucky, when I first bought the PS3, I was told the BR reader had a serious problem of overheating. So a paid extra for a 27 months warrenty.
    After having a PS2 and a PS1, I’m very upset with my PS3.

  54. alison on August 5th, 2009 11:09 am

Our PS3 stopped reading DVDS & CDs & Games last night - we have recently completed an update as several other people have said ….

Can anyone tell me - Is it worth calling sony support ? , or will they just tell us to buy a new one? its out of warrenty by about 9 months now! ? really disapointed, as as with most people , we cant really aford to shell out a couple of hundred pounds to get it replaced!

  55. Barry on August 6th, 2009 8:19 am

    @ Alison
Sign up for Sony’s Continous Play Service. Details on the PS3 website. It is a warranty service that you can sign up for at any time. It costs £4.99 per month. you will receive a new (refurbished) unit via courtier within two days.
This is an amazing service so take advantage.

  56. alison on August 6th, 2009 12:39 pm

    Thanks Barry

    Ill try that ! :)

  57. alison on August 6th, 2009 12:45 pm

Just tried barrys suggestion - this is the message the service now states:

Dear Continuous Players, we set up this service ultimately to provide a fast, efficient and cost effective way to ensure that your experience with PlayStation 3 & PSP was as seamless and hassle free as possible. Unfortunately, some individuals have chosen to abuse this service and as a consequence we feel that we have no option but to suspend Continuous Play and postpone acceptance of new Continuous Play plans until further notice. We will of course honour existing customer’s policies and look to amend the existing provision so that it is less vulnerable to exploitation. Sincere apologies

  58. Lindsay Knauff on August 6th, 2009 12:54 pm

    Alison-
Sony support won’t tell you that you have to buy a new one, but they will charge you $150 for you to send in your broken one. They will then send you a refurbished PS3. After being really upset at this firmware situation, I finally broke down and sent it in. They will send you the same model back, which was my main concern. To their credit, the process is extremely fast. Once you ship them your PS3, you will have a working one within a few days. This is my second time sending it in. Good luck!

  59. TG on August 7th, 2009 11:52 pm

this is ridiculous…has anyone confirmed yet that this is actually the result of an update? If so, Sony should be stepping up to the plate to either release a fix or extend the warranty as MS did with the RROD problem. People should not be forced to play 150 bucks to a company who’s fault the problem is in the first place…. if that’s not the problem, then maybe it’s a different story, idk. I think 1 year warranties are pretty sad in the first place… these companies have so much confidence in their products that they only feel they can back them for 1 year?

  60. FRY on August 29th, 2009 6:50 am

finally got a PS3 the other day…was used but worked great…then it updated to 2.8…piece of shit wont read any discs anymore…this blows :’-(

  61. David on August 30th, 2009 9:19 am

Hi all, same has happened to me with the 2.8 update of course Sony deny that any one else has had the problem when I probed them about it. I am going to send in a strong letter and threaten them with papers, would be good to get a few people involved as this is truly ridiculous. Failing that I will be getting a X box and I will never buy Sony again. oh yeah and Sony say it is a laser fault on the phone, i find that hard to believe as the system actuality recognises the games.

  62. FRY on September 2nd, 2009 12:02 am

well…3.0 didn’t fix anything…it just made everything ugly and retarded…I HATE SONY is there even any point in calling them??? I’m guessing they will tell me to go fuck myself in not so many words…I will never give those fags another dime!!!

  63. TG on September 2nd, 2009 12:28 am

I found a repair service on eBay- if you search the terms “ps3 no read repair” you’ll see it. 89 bucks to repair a no disc reading problem, but of course it’s not a corporation like sony so there is more risk. His feedback suggests he’s in good standing though. Just throwing that out there for anyone interested in getting it fixed, but not paying $150 bucks, or not wanting to give Sony any more of your money on principle etc.

  64. David on September 6th, 2009 2:07 pm

well unbelievably the new update has fixed my system, still mad at sony though for thr denial but hey i have a working PS3 now so that is a bonus!!!

  65. Errol on September 12th, 2009 8:46 pm

Same thing here dirty people at sony to say they messed up your game system after they shot it dead with a update. Now they want fix your game console after you spend 500 dollars for a console they burned up with a update.I am going to Sue you playstation with all this garbage you put out! And cahrge you 150 dollars if you dont have the reciept after a year! Who in the hell keeps a receipt sometimes I do but sometimes I dont.I have filed with the better business burea and I will have a lawyer call them real soon! Sony playstation is crap! The first time I buy a playstation ,first time I play it straight out the box and update it and it does not work anymore and cant play any movies are games! After a dang update they send to you on the dang system!! I hat playstation! And if I get my money back for this wich I dont have a reciept I will stay away from you!! Here me Sony!! They denied that this is a common fault with the PS3 even though there are thousands of instances of the same failure on the internet. My old PS1 and PS2s still work, yet Sony thinks it is entirely acceptable for their ridiculously expensive PS3 to only last 2 years before it transforms into an expensive doorstop. I for one will not be buying Sony products in future.

Report same problem. But I updated to 3.00 no inital problems. However I noticed some freezing issues. Then it stopped playing.

Out of warranty so tried to fix it myself. The lazer can be replaced but still couldnt read any discs. Also I ruined the alignment on the disc drive by leaving a disc in and then opening it.

I am not sure if the lazer I ordered was defective. Sent it for repair to Playstation. £128.00 - next day pick up and delivery of a new machine. Refurb machine only has 3 months warranty.

Advice : if you fix it yourself dont mess with disc alignment! always take the disc out. Check the replacement laser works.

I think update may cause disc failure but nobody has conclusively proved it yet. Complaint that sony’s machine should have 3 yr warranty in view of lifespan of disc and insurance scheme becuase high rate of failure.

My PS3 stopped reading all disk yesterday. I am beyond pissed! I called Sony and theyb told me the same thing about sending it in for 150. I am not sure if this will solve my problem but I hope it does because I am ready to ban playstation.

Mine just did yesterday. Assassins Creed 2 loaded, then froze. Now it will not read anything. Just updated to Version 3.01 the other day. This sucks. I will figure out what is going on and post back.
