Last time I drove my Honda Civic (LX 1.7L V4) it would not go over 20mph. This type of Honda was meant to be reliable and it does not seem that way. Do I shop for a new car or get the transmission work done?

ok, first off, your engine isn’t a v4…. its an inline 4, to make things simple V means that the engine is shaped like a V… also, there are a number of reasons that your car couldn’t go over 20 mph, if your 1st gear works fine and it wont shift into 2nd or 3rd, then you have some pretty big transmission problems like your gears are worn out, but if it will shift and your engine revs up real loud while in gear but you don’t hardly go anywhere, then your clutch is probably slipping and that ain’t a big problem, but don’t let some mechanic try to charge you 700 bucks to replace your clutch cuz they can tell you don’t know anything about cars whatsoever, a clutch itself is only about 100 to 150 bucks for that civic, and there sould be about a 1 hr service charge so it should only be around 300 bucks (if all he is doing is replacing the clutch).
I have a 2002 Honda Civic LX. I had transmission problems in 2008! I could not believe such a supposedly reliable car sould have such a major problem. I got the transmission repaired, certainly didn’t pay the cost for a brand new one though. So, here it is 2009 , a year and a half later and guess what…. it’s the transmission again!! Mine did the same as yours, it would not go over 20 mph. i guess the parts that didn’t break the first time did so this time around. It’s gonna get repaired again and then it is gone. Won’t be buying another Civic, don’t know if I want another Honda at all.
