D-Link reduces their routers power usage by 40%
August 9, 2008

D-Link has announced that they will be making changes to several of their routers in a move that will reduce power consumption and save you money.
The move is part of their plan to expand its successful ‘Green Ethernet’ technology as first seen in its previous models, the DWA-643 and DWA-553. Best of all however is that users who own the DIR-665 Xtreme N Gigabit router and the DIR-855 dual channel router will benefit from Green Technology in the way of a firmware update, meaning that this will not cost you anything to set up.
For those of you lucky enough to have one of those routers, the effects of this move could save you lots of money in the long run as D-Link have stated that the DIR-655 will benefit from a 32% power saving, while the DIR-855 will save an even better 41%.
D-link Marketing Manger Andrew Mulholland continued, “D-Link is proud to be taking the lead in integrating innovative, power-saving technology into its home and business networking solutions that doesn’t sacrifice performance or functionality. By offering green upgrades to our most popular Wi-Fi routers, we’re helping protect the environment whilst our customers save money in the process.”
So it’s a great bit of news for some D-Link owners out there, but if only Netgear could do the same to their routers, I’d be even happier.

Comcast and Tiscali share BitTorrent and gaming problem
July 28, 2008
Filed under Gaming, Networking, News, Sony Playstation 3

Comcast Corp the Cable TV giant’s and Internet service provider are doing wrong to customers; they have been accused of wrongly slowing down some of its customers Internet traffic.
Looking at the latest news, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will rule that Comcast has violated federal policy by deliberately preventing some customers from file-sharing. For example, sharing videos online via file-sharing services like BitTorrent, the company has acknowledged it slowed some traffic. But they said it was necessary so they could prevent a few heavy users from overburdening its network.
The ruling is expected Friday, the FCC decision will no doubt be challenged in court. Comcast being accused of blocking is a pretty bad thing or at least throttling traffic from subscribers trying to share files through the highly popular BitTorrent peer-to-peer network.
I know many customers in the UK are having the same problems with Internet providers “Tiscali” including myself. I have just cancelled my contract with Tiscali because when I want to play the Playstation 3 online it is nearly impossible to plays multiplayer online games with friends or family on the contacts list.
Basically what these companies are doing is traffic shaping, switching off certain ports. All companies not just Comcast should be looked into and Tiscali should be on top of the list, they may be in breach of contract for exercising port and service blocking. We are all getting blocked from a number of websites and of course my major problem is P2P (peer-to-peer) gaming.

Ok so you know what it is like, you are driving around and you need to check to see if you have received that important email that you have been waiting on. However; you never seem to be able to find a parking spot and see if you can find a Wi-Fi hotspot. Well worry no more as Chrysler are to use a new system called UConnect Web, this will allows drivers to turn most of their vehicles in to hot spots.
Chrysler unveiled this new system yesterday, this will allow motorist to check their emails while at a set of stoplights, just remember to keep an eye on those lights. Hey the kids in the back might get a chance to play a couple of games on the net as well.
The automaker will unveil a system today that will let motorists check e-mail on their laptop at stoplights, while the kids play online video games in the back seat. Keefe Leung, who works for Chrysler, has said “What UConnect Web does is turn the whole vehicle into an Internet hot spot,” he added “We see great potential for this.”
The UConnect Web is an add-on system for their UConnect information and entertainment systems; this makes Chrysler the first automaker to bring Wi-Fi to the car on a mass scale. A wireless router is used and will work together with a cellular-based Web connection; this will then help provide Wi-Fi access for laptops that are Wi-Fi enabled. You can also use it for a number of other devices, such as the iPhone and a range of other smartphones.
UConnect Web will be available for most 2009 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles from August. The system will cost $449 and there will be an installation fee of $50. You will then have to pay $29-a-month subscription after paying an activation fee of $35. The service will be provided through Autonet Mobile.

Crunch Gear thinks that the setup is easy as no special software was needed to be able to stream files. Streaming files onto the device was very simple. However Crunch has found a few cons on the Archos TV+ with 80GB Hard Drive, they fill that the device lacks something. When it comes to digesting content it is great, however you have to spend at least $40 worth of plug-ins for format support.
