In the build-up to the release of a new game, the publishers normally follow quite a predictable path as far as promoting it goes. So far, from Soul Calibur V publisher Namco, we have seen preview trailers, screens, character reveals and even the pre-order package has been detailed. Now something a little more unique has been done to commemorate the launch of the game as graffiti artist Jim Rockwell and his team has created a wall painting in London of a few of the characters measuring 16m.

It has to be said that while graffiti and tagging is frowned upon and is actually an offence, when it is permitted, in this case as part of an art project, it does produce some pretty impressive artwork. The piece itself is part of the art project called the Great Eastern Wall, which is being carried out by Rockwell’s aerosol art group ENDoftheLINE. The project is situated in a place called Shoreditch, which is part of London.

Several marketing ploys similar like this have been used in the past and in London also. The West End played host to a drop-in house which was covered in Monster Hunter artwork, a project commissioned by Capcom. ConceptArts, another art group was also commissioned to create a painting on the side of the Westfield shopping Centre, promoting the launch of Halo Reach.

The latest project took three days to complete but luckily for us the progress has been recorded in a video that compresses that time down to just over five minutes. The finished piece also features guest character Ezio Auditore as well as new comer Patroklos and the familiar Nightmare. If you are interested you can watch the video below. What do you think of the finished piece? Do you think this method of marketing should be used more often?

It is natural to assume that once a criminal has been convicted and placed in prison they are no longer a threat to society. Today’s news opposes that theory as it was revealed that while inmates are not allowed access to the internet, some of them have been smuggling in mobile phones in order to access it making them able to turn to cyber-bullying through Facebook.

According to the article at The Guardian, almost 350 people have been caught posting onto Facebook whilst serving a sentence in the past two years. Since then all the accounts have been closed by Facebook after investigations were carried out by prison officials. All were accessed without permission and it is also likely that not everyone who has accessed the site has been caught.

When the news was revealed it was of course met with some criticism, with the authorities and the system being question by campaigners. One member of Victim Support, Javed Khan even went as far as to say ‘Offenders using Facebook from prison makes a mockery of the idea that they are being punished.’ Another campaigner believes social networking sites should do more to ‘police this issue’ closer.

One of Britain’s most dangerous gangsters, Colin Gunn, who was charged for the murders of Joan and John Stirland in 2006, was able to access Facebook from prison two years ago in order to threaten his enemies. One of the 44 year-old’s posts read ‘It’s good to have an outlet to let you know how I am, some of you will be in for a good slagging and some have let me down badly and will be named and shamed ***ing rats.’

Facebook insists they are very quick to react when their policies are being abused. Who do you think should take responsibility in these types of situations the prison officials or the social network?

After the success that the Amazon Kindle Fire had over the Christmas holidays, it appears that there is a way that tablets and eReader can coexist after all, having recently brought you news of how the eReader’s success may have had a direct effect on sales of Apple’s iPad during the same period. Today we have news of another new eReader that Apple may want to look out for as Barnes & Noble are reported to be preparing to launch their next Nook for spring time.

News that the company would be bringing out a new Nook was first reported back in November last year. They would most likely have preferred to have launched the device earlier, especially after seeing the recent success Amazon has had, but it seems spring will be the soonest we will be seeing the device. That is around the same time of year that Apple Launched their iPad 2 last year, so in keeping with that scheduling, this spring could prove to be exciting as far as tablet fans are concerned.

While details of the new Nook are rare, it was The New York Times that was able to bring us the news that Barnes & Noble will be launching this spring, as they reported the company is currently putting the finishing touches on the next generation device. According to Cnet however the company is reluctant to reveal any more about the device so we are left speculating what it will actually be like. They also suggest in their article that the think the new Nook will be more like a regular tablet in both price and size as opposed to an eReader like the Kindle.

They also consider that it could be the opposite by being more like a low budget eReader aimed at the low-end market, although that area of the market is pretty well catered for. What do you think the new Nook will be more like, an iPad or a Kindle?

As if Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 needed help shifting copies, already being one of the most anticipated games of 2012. Blockbuster has just announced something that is likely to aid them to do just that, as those who intend on pre-ordering the game with the retailer will find they will be receiving exclusive DLC that allows you to play as stars from FIFA 12.

The game is due out March 30th but as CVG explains those who place their order early will have exclusive content in abundance on offer which allows player to play as other sports stars from around the globe as well as Barclays Premiership footballers. One DLC pack features playable characters including boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, Basketball star Dwight Howard, American football’s Marshall Faulk and Ice Hockey legend Jeremy Roenick.

The other pack will feature Premier League superstars including Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, Arsenal’s young speedster Theo Walcott, Manchester City’s work horse James Milner and Manchester United front man Wayne Rooney. The pre-order DLC comes as part of a series of exclusive deals that Blockbuster will continue to offer throughout the year. The retailer’s head of games, James Morton said they ‘are delighted to be able to reveal the pre-order extras that will be available with Tiger Woods PGA Tour’ through their continued relationship with EA.

Blockbuster has had a tough time over the last couple of years with stores being closed down and going into bankruptcy in the US, as their movie rental service was the main focus and is now being offered on so many other platforms. They will be hoping their new found games focus may just change things around, and if this latest offer is anything they’re certainly on course to do so.

What do you think of this offer? You can check out the screens over at CVG by clicking the link above.

Here is some exciting news for those Android tablet owners who felt they were being left out when it came to finding out all the latest news and goings on in the world, as a new BBC News app has finally been launched designed specifically for those devices.

To begin with the app was only available on Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices before it eventually rolled out across Android smartphones, which is reported to have been downloaded on the Google platform devices over 3 million times since. As of today however it will be made available to Android tablets also, the owners of which can now take advantage of the app’s service.

Unfortunately there are some limitations which are the app only works on tablets that have a display of 7.1” or more and are running Android Honeycomb, meaning those running older versions like Gingerbread will still miss out. For those that are able to use it and are interested in doing so, the app has been optimized for the larger screens, as you may have guessed and is easily customizable, allowing users to access to several on-demand videos as well as offering the option to specify the content that they are interested in separating it from the rest.

The BBC has also announced they are working on an international version of the app meaning our friends over in the US will soon be able to catch up with the news of the world via the BBC also. At the end of last year the BBC began rolling out their BBC iPlayer app across Android smartphones and the iPhone, which had previously only been available on the iPad. Will you be using the BBC News app on your Android tablet?

Earlier this month we explained to our readers how they could get their hands on a Windows Phone Mango device for cheap as ZTE, the Chinese telecommunication equipment specialist, were offering their first smartphone of 2012, the Tania for less than £250. Now it appears that value for money is a theme amongst the company’s other portable devices also, as they are will soon be offering their V9A Light Tab 2 tablets for pre-order for just £234.

We also brought you some interesting news about another tablet that the company has on offer earlier today, as it was reported that the ZTE Optik is an Android 3.2 Honeycomb device that will be available for just $99 on a two year contract at Sprint, undercutting its fiercest rivals and closest competitors, who offer similar ecosystems, by a substantial amount.

Today’s news comes courtesy of online retailer Clove who has just announced that the ZTE V9A Light Tab 2 Android tablet will be up for pre-order as from the end of February. It will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which unfortunately is not the latest version of the OS although it is still impressive, besides for a 7” tablet at that price there can’t be many complaints. Clove describes the device as ‘a computing solution that offers performance and reliability at a price that we all prefer.’

As far as the specs are concerned reports are suggested they have improved since the tablet was first announced last year. As well as the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS and its 7” capacitive touchscreen display, the Light Tab 2 will also feature a 3,400mAh battery, a 3.2 megapixel camera on the rear, 4GB of storage and a 1.4GHz processor. It also includes Wi-Fi as well as 3G and will be just 12.6mm thick making it a very attractive product for first time tablet buyers.

From the moment Google+ first launched it has been a fairly exclusive site, enforcing strict policies about who joins and only having limited spaces available to begin with. Since then Google has relaxed certain rules and now has a huge following, although nowhere near the scale of rival social network Facebook just yet. That may be about to change however as they are now allowing teenagers to sign up to the social network.

Of course with these relaxed rules and allowing for new younger 13+ users to join, it brings fresh security issues that must be addressed first, which is why Google say they are also introducing new safety requirements specific to the under 18s age group. Any security changes made are reported to trigger warnings and default settings will be tighter than for the adults, which will include restrictions on video chat and controls concerning who is actually allowed to contact the teens.

Google+ Vice President, Bradley Horowitz says ‘Sadly, today’s most popular online tools are rigid and brittle by comparison, so teens end up over-sharing with all of their so-called ‘friends’.’ With the new default security settings only the people in the teens’ circles will be able to see their relationship status, for example, or comment on their posts or notify them. They will also receive a warning if they are about to post something that will be public, as a reminder.

Horowitz concluded that Google’s aim is simple ‘build awesome features that teens really want, encourage safe behavior through appropriate defaults and in-product help, and make abuse reporting tools easy to find and use.’ According to the report at TG Daily, this new move from Google+ won’t apply in the Netherlands, South Korea or Spain as the national age requirements differ.

Are you glad the age restriction has been lifted?

Although Apple’s dominance in the smartphone market with their iPhone has been outnumbered by the amount of Android alternatives available, they are still regarded as the one to beat when it comes to the tablet market, which their iPad dominates. Today’s news suggests their dominance may be threatened now however as Android gains tablet market momentum.

The figures according to Strategy Analytics, which were reported by The Telegraph, show Android tablet sales tripled to 10.5 million worldwide as the total tablet market grew to 26.8 million in the last quarter of 2011 from 10.7 million at the same time the year before. Windows 7 tablet and BlackBerry PlayBook sales accounted for less than a million of those units between them. Meanwhile Apple managed to more than double the total amount of iPads they shifted in the last quarter of 2010 during the last quarter of 2011 which also suggests momentum, although not as much as Android tablets.

At the same time Apple also lost 10% of the global market share reducing it to 58% from 68% the year before, while the Android tablet global market share climbed to 39%. This is where Android threatens Apple’s dominance as market share is the key and they clearly have the upper hand. A similar situation occurred in the smartphone market which is now dominated by Android handsets despite the iPhone being the best-selling smartphone on the market.

Despite the figures and the momentum gained by Android, Apple could still end up retaining their dominance as their next-gen devices are always hotly anticipated and the iPad 3 is rumored to be released later this year, as well as the iPhone 5. The Android OS will continue to feature in more devices however which certainly aids their market share. Do you think the iPad is at threat of losing its dominance in the tablet market?

Fans of the Sci-Fi horror series of Alien films will be aware more than most that the games have always failed to live up to the standards of the movies, much to their disappointment. This year will see the release of a new game called Aliens: Colonial Marines, which so far is looking promising. The biggest issue surrounding the title at the moment is when its actual release date will be.

The game’s publisher, SEGA originally signified spring 2012 as being the period that we could expect to see the game released. However, today’s news suggests that the date has been pushed back a little further, as AVP Galaxy spotted that the official website now reports we won’t be seeing the game until autumn 2012. When the publisher was asked for a comment on the matter it was revealed that they were not discussing the release date for the moment, suggesting a simple delay was to blame.

Earlier this month we brought our readers the first details of the collector’s edition of the game which was packed full of bonus Alien content including a new game mode, unlockable weapons and a highly detailed resin display model, complete with a limited edition display box. The details came from what was thought to be a leaked image, making the announcement somewhat unofficial, but led us to believe we would be seeing the game released sooner rather than later.

With a new release date now thought to be coming in autumn we can expect to see a lot more details revealed about the game in the not too distant future. Perhaps some trailer and screenshots would be enough to get an idea of the quality of the game, but for now we will just have to assume that the game may end up being a disappointment as past Alien games have been, hopefully we get proved wrong.

What do you think of Aliens: Colonial Marines so far?

Earlier today we brought you some worrying news that revealed games industry giant Nintendo is facing some troubled times ahead after reporting huge sales losses. One positive thing they do have ahead of them however is the launch of their new console, the Wii U which is expected to be released at the end of the year.

According to CVG there is some fresh debate however, this time over whether the company will actually call their next-gen console the Wii U, as reports from a close source are suggesting Nintendo is contemplating changing the name in order to attract more attention, and will do so ahead of the E3 event later this year. It is believed that consumer confusion over the 3DS name and a disappointing E3 reveal are the reasons that the change is being considered.

After today’s news it is clear there is now a lot of pressure riding on the launch of Nintendo’s next console, whatever they decide to call it, which is why they must consider and discuss all aspects that could prevent the launch from being a successful one. The company claims they had trouble shifting 3DS units as consumers found it hard to differentiate from the older DS systems and as a result were forced to use bright red box stickers as well as the TV ad phrase ‘This is not DS, this is Nintendo 3DS’ just to be clear.

These are the kind of mistakes the company will be keen to avoid, hence the name change discussion. They also believe their E3 presentation could have been better as a lot of consumers were left wondering what the Wii U was meant to be, with a lot of attention being focused on the tablet part rather than the console itself. This year they will be looking to be clearer and hope for more of an impact amidst consumers. Will a name change be enough though?

What do you think they should call their next console?
