Xiaomi Redmi 4 4G Review: Impressive features on a budget

By Alan Ng - Jun 12, 2017

There are many smartphone fans out there who would love to buy the latest Samsung Galaxy or Apple iPhone 8 but simply can’t due to the growing costs that new devices launch with, with many saying that they are just too expensive.

We’re here to tell you though that there are plenty of other fantastic alternatives on the market and one brand which you have probably heard of but still not too familiar with is Xiaomi, who are known for producing feature packed smartphones at a fraction of the price demanded by Samsung and Apple.

With this in mind, we have a short Xiaomi Redmi 4 4G review to give you now, which is the International version of the device allowing you to insert any sim card in and use with your usual network or carrier.

Specs and Main features: The Redmi 4 4G features a 5-inch display with a 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution and runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box. It has Xiaomi’s popular customized MIUI on top which is very close to a stripped down version of Android.

It runs on a Snapdragon 625 2.0Ghz Octa Core processor and 3GB of RAM, with gaming performance handled by an Adreno 506. There’s plenty of storage available too, with 32GB on board and room for 128GB more with MicroSD card.

The camera takes some impressive photos too, with a 13MP sensor on the rear and a 5MP camera on the front for selfies and video chat. There is video recording as standard and it also has HDR features, panorama mode and various filters for those that love taking selfies then uploading them to various social spaces instantly.

Being the International version it comes pre-loaded with an entire suite of Google apps, while there are a few Mi specific apps bundled from Xiaomi as well such as Mi Remote and MIUI Forum but nothing too obtrusive.

Two features which are specific to MIUI are Second Space and Dual Apps. Both are very useful, with Second Space giving you the option to essentially ‘split your phone’ into two accounts, sending photos and other files into the second space if you want to separate certain media into a different area. Second Space is particularly handy as it creates an icon on your homescreen where you can just switch to the space at any time and switch back with a tap of the button.

Dual Apps works in a similar way, but this relates to the entire phone functions as you can create a second account on the phone with different pin and security options if you have others using the device and want to protect your side of the phone.

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 4G battery is a 4,000mAh capacity and you’ll be pleased to hear that battery life is extremely impressive. There is a separate battery menu in the settings in which you can see how long you have left and also get a detailed breakdown of what apps are using the most battery – you can add to your remaining battery life by letting the Redmi 4 4G troubleshoot the most consuming apps.

A single charge will get you over 13 hours, so if you are only using this phone for casual use and not heavy use on gaming for example, you are going to get long life out of this device – which in our opinion makes up for the fact that the battery is non-removable.

Gaming performance on the Redmi 4 4G: If you do however plan to play games primarily on the Xiaomi Redmi 4 4G, you may want to consider other Xiaomi devices such as the more powerful Mi 6. We tested two of the most popular games on the Redmi 4 4G, these being Marvel Future Fight and Injustice 2.

Marvel Future Fight is definitely playable, but performance intensive modes such as ‘Extreme Alliance Battle’ suffered a little bit and wasn’t able to maintain a steady frame rate at certain high pressure moments.

Injustice 2 faired a lot better in our opinion and we could play the game with no noticeable lag. If you have recently downloaded this game and plan on switching to a Xiaomi device, we think you’ll be impressed with how well the Redmi 4 4G can run this game using the Adreno 506 GPU.

We mentioned the Mi 6 as this comes with a higher spec offering the Adreno 540 GPU, Snapdragon 835 Vs Snapdragon 625 on the Redmi 4 4G and 6GB of RAM compared to the 3GB you get on the Redmi 4 4G. With those upgrades, this device may be the suitable option if you plan to play the most demanding games on Google Play – we hope to test the Mi 6 out for you soon to confirm this!

We’ve included some pictures here of the device and also some test photos that we took with the camera. We were very impressed at how many features Xiaomi has managed to pack into a device that costs around $170 in the US and £156 in the UK for the International Version.

Xiaomi is something of an unknown quantity especially for the UK market, but if you feel that iPhones and Galaxy devices from Apple and Samsung respectively are far too expensive, you will do well to find a cheaper alternative than Xiaomi which packs so many features into one device.

The good news is that Gearbest are offering some fantastic deals on the Xiaomi Redmi 4G International version. Even better is that shipping is within the UK and US so you won’t have to wait several weeks for shipping from Hong Kong or China.

How to buy the Xiaomi Redmi 4 4G right now: At the time of writing, Gearbest are offering the Redmi 4 4G International Version for £156.21 in the UK, while US buyers can take advantage of a special Flash sale price for $160 here.

For future Xiaomi Flash Sales from Gearbest, you can keep checking this page where we’ll list all of the current deals available.

Are you a lover of Xiaomi devices and have imported to your country recently? If so, we would love to know what you think about the brand compared to Apple and Samsung. Are you very happy with the quality at a much cheaper price?
