AOL Mail down on February 8 with service error

By Alan Ng - Feb 8, 2016

It looks like there has been a sudden AOL Mail outage on February 8, or Chinese New Year for many. At the time of writing, AOL Main is down in the US and UK with users seeing a constant service error message.

If you were wondering why you can’t sign into AOL Mail today, it looks like the entire Mail service has been hit. The exact error which you could be seeing is an AOL Mail “Service Error”, which states that “There was a problem handling your request. An unspecified error has occurred.”

Confirmation of users suffering from AOL Mail not working properly on February 8 can be seen in the image we’ve supplied below showing live activity on Twitter.

The good news at least is that the AOL Main team has already acknowledged the outage on February 8 and have said that they are now trying to fix the problems as a first priority.

We’ve digged out the following official status update from the company, so hopefully the outage won’t last long with the team already handling the situation.

Is AOL Mail down for you right now in your area? We’ll keep you updated once we hear more.

Update: Some more details on the specific types of errors that some users are seeing. One of the culprits seems to be “GAH! DEFAULT Report ID: webprd-m88-20160208-160109” – anyone of you getting this right now?

And yet, as always, we can still access our email from other devices. I’m accessing my AOL mail from my phone right now! Which means it is the same problem AOL has always had with this subject – only the desktop links are disabled (broken) by this simple little Chinese hack, so simple a child probably created it. IT IS NOW, AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN, A CODING ISSUE. This problem has been happening for the entire history of AOL. So easy to fix… if they really cared enough to do so

Down in Mississippi since this morning. This is intolerable.

It’s telling that there’s been very little notice of this in the general media.

I blame the teachers. And George Bush.

all it says is some annoying message saying “GAH!”
Brutal, been down ALL day. A co-worker was able to sign in a few mins ago and access his email and when he tried to log in to his other account its back to “GAH” again. Other than that one time neither one of us have been able to login at all.

AOL mail has been down for over 3 hours…this is insane. As others have posted, AOL’s only service of value is email. Obviously even the best can encounter problems, but over three hours today makes it necessary for me to look now use my other email account as my primary provider. AOL is simply too unreliable.

I use aol mail just because the nav and user interface are so simple and easy to use. I also have accounts with gmail, outlook, and apple mail, but they all seem so cluttered and focused on integrating with other applications, especially on the desktop versions. Sometimes I just want email to do email and nothing else.

AOL has really only ONE thing to offer. Email addresses that go back over twenty years. If they can’t take care of that then there is NO reason to stay with them.
