Windows update error 8024402f fix for Norton users

We have some useful information to share for those that have recently been having problems with encountering Windows update error 8024402f on Norton or just without any reason.

We know that a number of Windows users have been suffering this week, specifically to do with using Norton and resulting in the 8024402f error when uninstalling Norton Internet Security via the Norton Removal tool, or in Add/remove programs.

Fortunately, there does appear to be a few Windows update error 8024402f fix methods that you can try if you constantly see the ‘An error occured while checking for new updates’ message.

Microsoft knows that this is a known problem as they have already set up a help page here advising users what to do if they get the Windows update error 8024402f on PC.

Microsoft suggests to 1: Close Windows Update, 2: wait 10 to 15 minutes, and 3: then run Windows Update again. If that fails then they advise users to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter for further assistance.


Digging deeper though, we found out that the root of the problem could be caused by the Norton Removal tool removing a key file that causes the Windows update to break.

The file in question is the ‘FilesNotToBackup’ file and instructions on how to locate it on your computer is included in the image above.

If you have tried other methods and still can’t fix the Windows update error 8024402f, then it may be worth ensuring that you have the file mentioned above in the correct place.
