New Vauxhall Astra GSi to rival Ford Focus ST

By Peter Chubb - Jun 16, 2015

A more powerful version of the new Vauxhall Astra, the GSi is said to become available next year, and will no doubt be a direct rival to the Ford Focus ST. This is not going to be the only powerful version, as there are also plans for a new VXR version as well.

The new Vauxhall Astra GSi power output from its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine will be 247 horsepower, which is the same as the Ford Focus ST. These two models have been going at it for years, so we are not all that surprised that Vauxhall wants to take the fight to Ford in the hot-hatch department once again.

Vauxhall looks set to release the new Astra GSi as a 5-door model first, although a 3-door version will follow, but we suspect this will depend on how well the public takes to this new model. And, if all goes well, we could even see a Sports Tourer version to rival the Focus ST estate.

Audi has been making fast estates for years, so it makes sense for Astra to have a piece of this pie.

While the new Vauxhall Astra GSi specs are unknown at this stage, Autocar does report that more details will become available over the coming month. Maybe, Vauxhall will wait for the standard versions of the new Astra to become available for pre-order in September first?

Going back to that VXR version, this could come with even more power, with suggestions of 296 horsepower. This does seem like a lot of power to demand on the front wheels, and so we can only hope that Astra considers making this a four-wheel drive model.
