Play YouTube in the background on iOS with trick

By Alan Ng - Apr 22, 2015

We all love the YouTube app on the iPhone, but if there was one common complaint from users, it’s that it can’t play videos in the background.

Fortunately, you may not be aware that there is a way to do this with a handy little trick that doesn’t require a jailbreak or any third party software.

Right now, if you press the home button on the iPhone when playing a video on the YouTube app, that video will close instantly.

The secret for how to play YouTube in the background on iPhone though is to use YouTube’s mobile website. Simply go to m.YouTube.com on Safari and then search for the video of your choosing.

Pause that video, press the home button and then swipe up to bring up the iOS control centre. From there, you’ll see that your YouTube video listing is highlighted and you can just unpause for the video to continue playing in the background.

It’s as easy as that and we’re willing to bet that some of you didn’t know this little trick. You are then free to use other apps such as Snapchat and Whatspp, while your favorite music playlists play in the background.

Apologies if this was common sense to some of you, but let us know if this helped and if it worked for you if you didn’t previously know how.
