Driveclub PS Plus Edition demand for free version

By Alan Ng - Jan 12, 2015

We are almost at the mid-way point of January and still there has been no solid update on the status of the Driveclub PS Plus Edition release date, which PS4 owners are desperately waiting for.

It has become a sad state of affairs truth be told, although in realistic terms the game should only release when it is fully ready. The fact that we have heard nothing for weeks from the developer suggests that it still simply isn’t ready.

There hasn’t been an update since Christmas on the status of the Driveclub free version release date, but hopefully it won’t be long until Evolution can provide the next update for fans.

Until then though, we can see that comments are pouring in from impatient fans who are still demanding answers. We’ve spotted that just moments ago, game director Paul Rustchynsky has shared the following reply to one Twitter user who was asking for an update.

driveclub-ps-plus-status-update

As we presumed, Driveclub PS Plus Edition is still not ready. Is it now too late to consider the game coming out for February’s PS Plus update, or are we looking at a release further on down the year?

The good thing to note is that it looks like Evolution has managed to fix the initial launch problems that they had with the main game. Many who are playing the game now are mostly happy with the progress being made, which is obviously great to see.

Are you still waiting for the free version of Driveclub that was promised last year? Give us your thoughts on the continued wait – are you ok to hold on for as long as it takes?

it was meant to be a free full game on launch for ps+ users

now we’re getting a pretty much a demo with trophies and it’s not even out after a year delay and a further couple months

because how long could it possibly take to remove content from a full game already released

  • Keal G Seo

Promised last year? How about promised back in 2013 as it was supposed to be a launch title. I’m not really waiting on it anymore, I just check into it every now and then when I see an article on it. I really don’t think it is coming out anymore. They are too vague in their “updates” and comments on it…even avoiding the topic in their facebook posts where they had at least been saying stuff like “no news yet”.

    • Shane

      I’m waiting for Project Cars.

  • I tell you what though….. I bought this game a few weeks ago and I am very happy with it. Just buy it. Its worth it. If you wait for the free version your probably going to want to buy it anyway.

  • ziggy

The way I see it they should just give us the whole game for free since we have waited over a year

    • Josh101

Good luck with that. There is no way they are going to give the full game away for free.

  • your dad

Broke ass kids. Go now some grass and buy it…

  • Your_Favorite_Candy #Banned

Tires of fanboys telling people to just go buy it.

    • Walter

Tires of people bashing the game that has no intention of ever playing it (or have the console to play it)

      • lol Walter, you’re desperately defending this game. You’ve done your job, so please go take a rest or something, there are no winners here. I understand your need to justify the money you spent. We all get it.

        • Josh101

He has a point. By your profile it’s apparent that you are a Xbox fanboy. Locking your account for what reason exactly? “Deal with it” being the description says it all. Don’t be mad because this game isn’t the mess you hoped it would be. The game is absolutely amazing.

        • PS4 only. I only owned the original Xbox.

        • Josh101

Really? Then why are you trolling on websites under a locked account? It’s obvious by your undertone that you are simply trolling. Again, don’t be mad the game isn’t the mess you’d hoped it to be. :) Thanks for playing.

        • In all honesty, I have no idea what you are talking about. What’s a “locked account”?
I asked Walter to stop embarrassing everyone, and he even agreed he was being ridiculous. I’m only replying now because you guys are still egging me on. Who’s the troll?

        • Josh101

Um, your account is set to private. That doesn’t happen automatically, you have to enable it. How is Walter embarrassing everyone? You commented on him defending the game when there was no need. Driveclub is well worth the asking price, it is one hell of a game. Though it seems, you have issue with people defending it. You implied he wasted his money on the game, when that obviously is not the case. Then you implied he wasted his time on the game, as though the game is not worth the time. So yes, you are trolling.

        • Tubsy

Im the troll, no you’re the troll, lol good times. I wonder how long we can keep this up.

        • Josh101

You know who you are. Anyone reading can see my point. I’m sorry you cannot.

        • Tubsy

Yes and it was obvious I’m am Xbox user too, u must be one of those smart people I hear about on the ibternetz.
Just for discussion, why would I want it to be a mess? I love PlayStation.

        • Josh101

Yes, with grammar like “I’m am Xbox user too,” it is apparent that you are a Xbox owner.

        • Walter

Hmm.. Good point, but mine came bundled so I actually didn’t spend money on it. Kind of embarrassing when a put-down hits the mark completely because of assumption isn’t it? You’re half-right though, I have said enough on the topic. Haters gonna hate.. Cheers!

        • OK then you’re trying to justify all the time you’ve wasted on it. Time is money :-) still, you’re very embarrassing.

        • Walter

Oooh.. I get it. You’re trolling. Well done mate, I give meaningful reasons why I like a game and you… troll. One of us should be embarrassed, check the mirror to find out who.

        • Lol. you’re troll who made 50 replies, not me.

        • Walter

And not one of them attacking or derogatory. You on the other hand..

        • Tubsy

yes i’m so horrible for pointing out how ridiculous you were being. Dude, you agreed with me, you do remember that right? You are actually the quintessential definition of a troll.

        • Walter

My original reply is in limbo so here’s the condensed version: I only agreed that I’ve said enough on the topic. All my comments were limited to positive feedback as to why I think the game is worth buying and never did I personally attack anyone. You took little stabs my way with your “embarrassing” comments and then again with the “thanks for leaving” even after I ignored your belittling comments in an effort to be civil. I’m sure that doesn’t make me a quintessential troll. What it does prove though is that you’re a quintessential cu.. Oh nevermind, you figure it out.

        • Tubsy

Wow days later, you’re still going! Rock on troll boy :-)

        • Walter

          Yes. You are.

        • Josh101

You could have left it, that’s what makes you the troll. By fanning the flames with “OK then you’re trying to justify all the time you’ve wasted on it. Time is money :-) still, you’re very embarrassing, thanks for leaving.”
That is why you are the troll.

      • Your_Favorite_Candy #Banned

Everyone would play it if they released the plus version like promised

        • Walter

To completely hijack the post: What are you playing right now?

        • Your_Favorite_Candy #Banned

          Netflix

        • Walter

Lol.. Well, at least it’s cinematic.

  • Paul Fitzgerald

It’s like £20-£25 quid for crying out loud?! Why wait for a demo of one set of courses in one location when you can have multiple locations, tracks & cars for a measly £20? It’s absolutely gorgeous by the way, weather is immense!

    • ColonelBazz

You really think i’m going to pay money to a company that just lied in order to make you buy it? It’s still not ready? It’s 3 whole months after the release of the full version, while this is a some sort of demo? How hard can it be…

      • Walter

It’s not good that they haven’t released the demo, but I really can’t see how they lied to make you buy.

        • Keal G Seo

They got everyone pumped about it and then pulled the free version in order to take advantage of the impatience of most of today’s generations. They, along with every other company, know that younger people of today are used to instant gratification and don’t have the patience to wait…even if it is for something that is never going to come out.

        • Walter

It’s a valid opinion. I just think the strained servers makes more sense to me personally. I’m biased though, because I think it’s brilliant.

        • Josh101

I highly doubt that Sony and Evolution Studios risked the livelihood of a brand new IP for something as idiotic as you are suggesting. The online portion obviously wasn’t functioning on a large scale at launch. That’s not something you would do and piss off paying customers in the process. That is the MOST ignorant thing you could possibly think. Honestly, think about it..

        • Keal G Seo

Ignorant, ignorant, ignorant. Millions and million of dollars ignorant. Don’t find it interesting that the Plus Edition never made it to the PSN store? IE How did they know they were going to have server issues and not to put it on the store on release day? Ignorant, just ignorant.

        • Josh101

They had the digital version, which they locked and people couldn’t even purchase the game off the store. This was a day after the launch of Driveclub. The only people that could play were the ones who bought it physically. You would know this if you would have looked. The negative publicity they received far outweighs the “benefit” of a few more purchases they may have received by not having a free PS+ version. You are ignorant for thinking that is the case. The servers couldn’t even handle the people that bought the game, as I know, because I bought the game and couldn’t play online until 5 days after launch. But you wouldn’t know that either, because you didn’t purchase the game.

        • Keal G Seo

You sure do like the word “ignorant” although you are apparently ignorant of it’s meaning.
But yes, I did look. While the regular copy was locked, the PS+ members still had access to the discounted version that was not. Notice there are 2 copies on the PS store.
How do you know they didn’t realize that the IP was doomed and didn’t care about publicity anymore when they realized they wouldn’t be making a second one?
And actually I do know that the servers had issues because I followed the game’s launch for several weeks waiting for the PS+ version. But again you must be ignorant of the fact all of this was chronicled on facebook and other sites.
Again, they never blocked the PS+ discounted version of it. Only the version at full retail price.
You just seem like a fan boy that is trying to take up for a company you have no stake in. Do you really think you are going to change the mind of a random person online by making opinionated arguments? Grow up and stop being so argumentative kid.

        • Josh101

“But yes, I did look. While the regular copy was locked, the PS+ members still had access to the discounted version that was not. Notice there are 2 copies on the PS store.”
I’m guessing you didn’t attempt to purchase either copy after adding it to your cart then, eh? My friend that lives in Texas was unable to complete the transaction and could not buy the game until a month after release. You are calling me argumentative, but you are actually ignorant to believe they would mess the game up on purpose to try and get people to buy it? Do you have any idea how ignorant that sounds? That’s why I’m calling you ignorant. You are a moron.

        • Keal G Seo

No see, ignorant, idiotic and moron are all totally different things. You obviously have no idea what ignorant, or other demeaning words, mean so any argument you make is invalid based on your level of intelligence.
But then you want to call me “ignorant” for second hand information that the game was purchasable when you yourself are relying on secondhand information that it wasn’t.
First, where ever you got 1 million pre orders from is wrong. It took a week after launch for them to reach 1 million. So either you accept false information or spit out lies in attempts to further your arguments. On top of that they have only sold about 1.51 million world wide. The Crew for example has sold .95 million just on the PS4. The game is a failure.
As for the game play and graphics being “second to none”, that is entirely disputable considering those are things based solely on subjective opinion Once again you are using words above your grade level that you don’t know the meaning of.
Please oh please point out where I said they screwed up their game on purpose. I said they canceled the PS+ version on purpose because the game and servers sucked and they wanted to bolster sales.

        • Josh101

I know what ignorant, idiotic and moron mean. You are all of those. You are ignorant to the fact that the game was available digitally, but not purchasable for weeks. You are a moron to think the game was deliberately sabotaged to gain more sales due to the PS+ version being M.I.A. It is idiotic to believe Sony would do this to a brand new IP. All while smearing the PS+ reputation it’s building.

“But then you want to call me “ignorant” for second hand information that the game was purchasable when you yourself are relying on secondhand information that it wasn’t.”

I seen it first hand, I also have friends in city who have PS4’s, they could not purchase the game either. He even called his bank the following morning to see if there was a discrepancy on his account. You could add to cart but when completing transaction it would fail.

“I said they canceled the PS+ version on purpose because the game and servers sucked and they wanted to bolster sales.”

That is another point that you ignorant of. The game is perfectly fine, it has been since day 1. No game-breaking bugs, no texture pop-in, no frame-rate drops, etc. The SERVERS had an issue. I witnessed the server issues first hand, while you did not.

“So tell me how they knew in advance to not put the PS+ version on the store at all instead of it being there and just being locked?”

Driveclub released in the U.K. on October 8th, 2014 and in the U.S. on October 10th, 2014. Sony’s Playstation Store updates on Tuesday of every week. See the problem here? The game released in the U.K. on a Wednesday and in the U.S. on Friday of the same week…. Again, you are ignorant of the facts and a moron with a idiotic notion. They released the game, the servers couldn’t handle the amount of data that they did not see in testing.

        • Keal G Seo

Wow, is your grammar total garbage. Given my mother was an English teacher I can’t even bring myself to finish reading all of this. Bottom line is that you are misusing words that you apparently don’t know the meaning of and fanboy-ing out over a random stranger’s comments online. Quit being so butt hurt that you got screwed out of your parents 60 bucks. You really need to get a life kid. Did you really think, at any point, you were going to change the opinion of anyone with your ranting?

        • Josh101

Ah, old classic ad-hominem attacks. Escape the facts by moving the goal posts. My grammar does not matter, the facts do. My last post is full of facts that completely destroy your logic. I cuold tpye lkie tihs and you can read it just fine.

“Quit being so butt hurt that you got screwed out of your parents 60 bucks.”

This is especially hilarious. I own my house and pay my bills.

“Did you really think, at any point, you were going to change the opinion of anyone with your ranting?”

Anyone can search what I mentioned in the previous post. They can see that I am right. From the release of the game, to the graphic superiority over other console racing games. Again, you are ignorant of the facts and a moron with a idiotic notion.
          Thanks for playing!!! :) 😀 😉 ^_^ ;^)

        • Keal G Seo

Your last post is you ranting. Please provide a source for your “facts” if they are in fact facts. I don’t have the burden of proof, so no I didn’t waste my time looking up anything you said. My opinion that they held the PS+ back in order bolster sales still stands.
You are still a butt hurt fanboy making pointless arguments to random stranger online.

        • Josh101

No, you are ignorant of the facts, which you just admitted you are. You are a moron with a idiotic notion that “Sony held back the PS+ version of Driveclub to bolster sales.”

“My opinion that they held the PS+ back in order bolster sales still stands.”

Of course your opinion still stands, it’s your opinion. You are just a ignorant moron with a idiotic notion for thinking so. :^)

They locked the digital version from being purchased and dealt with backlash from people who bought it day one and couldn’t play online. In my case, I could not play until Saturday, 5 days after launch. It’s apparent that facts fly right over your head. The Sony Playstation store updates on Tuesday’s. The game released in Europe and the U.K. on Wednesday and Friday. They didn’t want to alienate those in Europe and the U.K. by releasing the PS+ version in America. They were going to release it world wide the following Tuesday, after launch.

        • Keal G Seo

Keep running your mouth. I’m not even reading your replies anymore since you can’t provide any actual proof of anything and I don’t feel like arguing the opinion of a butt hurt fanboy.

        • Josh101

Thank you for conceding the point. You have lost. Have a good day and better luck next time :)

        • Keal G Seo

Keep spitting that butt hurt fanboy-dom.

        • Josh101

What’s this? The proof is right above these posts and you STILL deny the facts? Ooooh, too delicious :)

        • Keal G Seo

See you have a thing for wanting to argue. I was all done with this but you just couldn’t let it go. You are a pitiful excuse for a human being. I don’t deny anything. Everyone knows what is in both of those articles. But neither of those articles say they were waiting an extra week to release the PS+ version. So I still stand by saying they canceled it to bolster sales.

So yeah, keep spitting that butt hurt fanboy BS.

Bottom line. Did they cancel or “delay” the PS+ version? Did that result in more people purchasing the game because they just couldn’t wait? Then STFU.

        • Josh101

It could have resulted in some people purchasing the game because they couldn’t wait. I’m not denying that. But, that is not the reason why they delayed the PS+ version. It was obviously because of server issues, which couldn’t handle the paying customers. Let alone adding in potentially MILLIONS of PS+ members. You are still an idiot if you actually believe they delayed it to potentially sell a few more copies. You are dumb for thinking so. That is NOT worth the negative publicity it has received and I’m sure Sony knows that. They even gave away DLC to compensate for the issues.

        • Keal G Seo

You are once again arguing fanboy opinion unless you can actually prove otherwise. Quit with all the butthurt already kid.

        • Josh101

          http:// community .us .playstation .com/t5/PlayStation-General/What-time-does-the-store-update-on-Tuesday/td-p/14301310

This link shows that the Playstation store updates on Tuesdays. Which would explain why the store wasn’t updated with the PS+ version on launch day. It launched on Tuesday 10-7-2014 in the U.S. alone. They were going to release the PS+ version for everyone the following week 10-14-2014. But due to server issues, delayed the release. Those who paid for Driveclub and had physical copies or digital copies were not able to play online. The game itself had no graphical issues, no texture pop-in and no drops in frames-per-second. It suffered server issues only. Which was cause for them to delay the PS+ version until they fixed the server issues for paying customers. Proof enough that they didn’t know they were going to have issues and found out after launch.

  • Kevin

But this is what they want for you to go and buy it.
The game was promised as a watered down version when the ps4 was to be released.
I’m not into racing myself but know people that have said the game is crap anyway, but each to there own i guess.

    • Walter

There are people that have said GTA V is crap. A lot of people disagree.

  • Walter

People should just buy the full game. It is more than worthy of getting your money. I don’t understand how “fans” would be clamoring for a free watered down version of the game instead of just buying the full version. Nobody that buys the full version as it is today will be disappointed.

    • Leeboyopm

Accept every one who plays it, nothing can tear me away from far cry 4, shadow of mordor and resogun any, but every one i know who got it says its terrible, and what i played makes me want to start playing forza 5 and horizon 2 again so much better

      • Walter

Except you mean. I had a real tough time understanding what you meant. Anyway, I don’t agree as I’m playing it and loving it. Looking at how full the lobbies are, I’m not the only one. And a lot of the names are the same so people are definitely coming back for more.

        • Leeboyopm

The game is terrible, have you thought the reason you see the same names is because hardly anyone brought it so you get put in same servers all the time, and by the way the game sold really bad, enen sony and evolution said there selfs it didnt sell as well as they wanted, and before you say every likes it they don’t even reviews say ts bad

        • Walter

It actually ranks at number 7 of PS4 sales for December. So not all that bad then. Anyway, I won’t force anyone to play it. Your loss really.

        • Leeboyopm

Number 7 for 1 month is really bad mate, when you take far cry, assassin creed and advanced warfare out what other games is it competing with, and i do somtimes think about getting it or wait for ps+ version, but is there any point when i have forza 5 and horizon 2, my grammar is only bad because i using ps4 controller motion thing and ps4 predicted text

        • Walter

It’s a different type of game. Less arcade-like than Horizon 2, and less of a simulator than Forza 5. If you’re a hardcore racer, then it might be worth your while. If not, then no. I don’t own an X-Box so neither of the 2 Forzas are an option for me, but since I’ve had my fill of arcade racers for a while I really don’t care to much for the one and sims that get crazy technical just bore me on the the other hand. I prefer games that lean a bit more to arcade but since the last 3 racing games I played were Burnout Paradise, NFS Most Wanted and Grid 2 I find the focus that Driveclub has on pure racing, without being too technical makes it a perfect fit.
It also doesn’t hurt that it’s the best looking racer on the planet.

        • James angus

Your Trying far to hard to press this game on people touting it as flawless and best looking game ever
your either working on behalf of the studio that released it or you very diluted

The reason the free edition isn’t being released is because the whole idea of it was to give people an insight into the game and make them want the full package
Going by its ratings reviews and general feedback anyone who plays it first is highly unlikely to purchase it afterwards so at the present time your only choice is to buy it to try and drag as many sales as possible out of it

In all honesty even if they released the full game as a free PS+ title I probably still wouldn’t waste my time with it

        • Walter

Not flawless. Just way better than what a lot of people (who don’t own the game) are making it out to be. I don’t represent them (although I certainly support them for making a game that I enjoy), and I just don’t know what you mean by saying I’m diluted so I can’t reply to that.

Since most of the issues that they have had centres around their servers not being able to take the strain of people playing it online and they’ve sold probably a bit more than a million copies, it is not that difficult to see that they haven’t released the ps+ version yet because they don’t feel ready to handle another possible 6 million + clients.

If the servers fall over for their paying customers because they rush to supply free copies to the world, can you imagine what the backlash would be then?
Funny that you should mention general feedback as it supports my other point: General feedback from basically every reviewer that is out there as well as people who’ve seen it in action says that it is the best looking racer on a graphical level that is out there. Check the IGN video and other comparison videos to see for yourself.
In all honesty I don’t really care if you play it or not, but any racing fan that doesn’t play it and owns a PS4 because they’re taking the word of people that haven’t played it is doing themselves a disservice. If you’re not going going to play it then at least do it for valid reasons.

        • Josh101

Just pulling out BS from every orifice eh? Everyone’s general feedback from anyone who Shareplays Driveclub with me, buys it within a week. Even if they released the PS+ version, you probably wouldn’t try it because you most likely don’t have a PS4. If you do, you are a idiot. This game IS flawless and the best looking racer ever. There are comparison videos ALL over the internet. It’s not something you can actually debate..

        • Gerald Nchabeleng

You must be deluded if you think the game sold poorly. Anyways you don’t actually have to try the game out all.

        • Josh101

Aren’t you just a trolling fanboy. Resident Evil 6 only sold millions of copies and Capcom said it was a failure…. Driveclub is amazing. Literally the best looking racer that’s ever been released. The sense of speed is perfect. Sorry, this game absolutely destroys FH2 and Forza 5. But you wouldn’t know that because you “heard” from “people you know” that it’s crappy.

        • Steve

The game outsold forza horizon and sold over a million units first week what are you talking about

    • Promises Promises

But a free version was PROMISED. Therefore, whether or not the full version is worth the money is neither here nor there. They just should not have promised a free version if they could not deliver. And 4 months is a long time. Games usually cost half as much 4 months after release, so when they finally deliver the free version, it will carry less value. To my mind, they should give the full version for free when they finally release it – as the article states, it will now be at least March (probably longer) before they will deliver. That is a minimum of 6 months after the promised date. They could at least give PS+ members a free month’s access (only worth around $5-$7).

      • Walter

It is a valid point, and it would be nice to get the whole thing for free, but I’m just saying that to me the game is so good it’s really worth a purchase. It’s really not difficult to see how much work has gone into the game, and although the online portion was broken at launch (and really for too long a time after launch) it plays silky smooth now. Certainly the positives of the game (Beautifully rendered cars and environments, awesome feeling of speed, solid AI, focussed racing) can be appreciated along with the stuff that’s been fixed.
I don’t disagree with you, I just love the full version.
As a side note: The article talks about the fans waiting for their free game. How can a person be a fan of a new IP that they haven’t played and don’t own? Seems silly.

So people who didn’t buy it should get it for Free? What about people like me who brought it and the season pass what do we get?
