PS4 Skype app release date expectation

By Alan Ng - Jan 1, 2015

The PS4 has a great selection of apps, but one PS4 app that is missing which we have heard repeated questions on is Skype for PS4. The app is available on Xbox One which isn’t surprising since Microsoft owns Skype – but does that mean that a PS4 Skype app release date will never happen in the future?

We last heard from Microsoft in August 2013 when the company said that they were committed to ‘cross-platform’ on the subject of Skype coming to PS4.

However, skip forward a year and a half later and there is no sign whatsoever suggesting that Skype is still on the way to the PS4. Sony has not said anything either and some may argue that they don’t need to with the PS4 Party app providing more than enough features for those that want to engage with video chats for free.

It’s not the same though, with many still demanding Skype functionality to make use of international calls and to use their Skype credit directly on the PS4 to call other Skype users who do not have access to a PS4.

Let’s hope that Microsoft and Sony can come to an agreement sometime in 2015 so that Skype finally arrives on the PS4. Spotify is another app that is badly needed on next-gen consoles in our opinion, but something tells us that Skype is more likely to come before given Spotify will offer no favors to Sony’s Music Unlimited service.

Are you a user who is also disappointed that there has been complete silence regarding a Skype app release date on PS4? Let us know your thoughts on this given that Skype is owned by Microsoft, plus your predictions on whether you think it will still come eventually.

sony and MS needs to work together on a few apps such as skype, eventhough MS owns skype they could still work out a deal to let sony use it on ps4, sony and MS can work together on some things and be competitive at the same time, lets not forget xb1 has blu-ray which sony had a lot to do with making blu-ray successful thx to the ps3, so since MS uses something that sony and others created why not let sony use skype? I hate to have to unplug my laptop and go through wires just to be able to talk to some of my friends on skype when playing ff14 since i play it on ps4 and they play on PC!? if i had skype on ps4 all i would have to do is plug my headset in DS4 and bam talk to them while playing, would make things less complicated.

Not having Skype on the PS4 is a GLARING omission. But it seems pretty obvious either Sony, Microsoft, or both, are refusing to allow this to happen.

Considering there is already a Skype Ps vita app, it seems irresponsible of both Microsoft and Sony to have not ported an app to the ps4 as well. This should have been done almost initially after the console release. They have the Skype app for Sony Smart TV’s as well… why such an oversight, especially when it would at least begin to bridge the gap for cross platform console gaming, which lets be honest, is where the future of console gaming is going, what with the rising costs involved with gaming….

Any time microsoft is limiting something I’m staying more away from them (microsoft) avoiding products they are providing… If they want something for themselfs then I recommend farming a pigs or other animals. They (microsoft) must to know that people want to be INDEPENDENT

One of the big reasons I bought the camera in the first place, was because I thought a Skype app would soon be available, as it is for PS Vita. I have a big family and with the camera in the living room, it would of been way more convenient to fit the whole family in one shot as apposed to in front of a computer monitor.

I see that Sony are working with ooVoo in releasing a video chat app in quarter 2 of this year, which helps very little as the grandparents, who have little to no computer knowledge have dedicated a skype camera connected to their TV – eliminating the need for a pc, tablet or downloading an app which is to tricky for them.

    Overall very disappointing.

Eh?! Do you even have a PS4? There’s no video chat at all; that was the PS3.
In any case, Skype is an ad-ridden, terrible piece of software. No thanks.

I’ve always wondered why the PSP and PS Vita has it, but the PS3 and PS4 does not. Would love to see it on the PS3 and PS4 but I’m not going to hold my breath.

Don’t care, never used skype and never will. I have many friends and family abroad and there are many alternatve solutions to free video calling.
