Takata airbag recall list could expand in December

By Peter Chubb - Nov 25, 2014

The ongoing saga of the Takata airbag recall looks set to continue for a while yet and could become an even bigger issue than the GM ignition recall. A meeting has been set with the air bag maker along with Honda, Toyota and BMW executives next month, but there is a fear the list of recalls could expend in December and beyond into 2015.

These executives have been summoned to Capitol Hill next week, where they will have to testify due to a growing concern about the safety, which has pretty much turned into a crisis. The hearing is set for December 3rd, and all parties involved will be under the spotlight, such as Takata, the car manufactures and also the NHTSA.

Takata will have to bring along documents with them in the hope that they will be able to answer questions that have yet to be answered. Many concerned motorists believe that Takata has something to hide, and that there needs to be transparency in this case, as drivers need to know just how bad these airbag recalls can get.

There are 24 questions in all that need to be answered and so it will be interesting to see what the outcome will be next week, and if all parties involved will finally be able to shed some light on the matter.

Autonews says the Senate has given Takata until December 12th to answer all the questions, and also has to answer to the Department of Justice. We have no idea what happens if they are unhappy with the outcome and what sort of penalty would be imposed on the Japanese company.
