Update to iPod touch 6G or abandon due to iOS 8

By Peter Chubb - Oct 8, 2014

Now that we know Apple is to hold an event on Thursday, October 16th (a bit out of character) the focus now turns to what we can expect. We have already discussed the prospect of the new iPad Air 2, along with new images being leaked, and the hope of a new Pro model, but what of the elusive iPod touch 6G? A new model is needed more than ever since the recent iOS 8 update.

One of the problems is that the processor in the touch 5G is of the A5 architecture, the same one that resides in the iPhone 4S, and we know both devices have slowed to a crawl since updating to iOS 8. We have seen reports on many forums, along with hearing from our readers that the 4S and current touch are having so many issues that they were forced to go back to iOS 7, although that no longer applies, as Apple has taken that ability away now.

Update to iPod touch 6G or abandon due to iOS 8

One reader suggested something that is a little over the top, although a few other Product-reviews have started to agree with him. His exact word were, “Apple will either have to update to Touch 6G or abandon it altogether. Which is a crying shame.”

If we do not see an iPod touch 6th generation next week, then do you think this is a sign Apple has pulled the plug on its personal media player? We know sales are not what they were, but consumers still like to have a separate music device, as to not drain the battery on their iPhone.

Let’s say for one moment that Apple unveils the iPod touch 6-gen, do you think it will based on the size of the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus?

If apple are so smart they could do us the favour of more hard work on iOS updates for the ipod touch 5g and put more hard work in and make it still able to update after the recent iOS 8.3 update

They release it every 2 years with the iPhone. They lower the price when the S iPhones come out.

There has to be a new ipod touch or perhaps Apple will give it a new name and call it a baby ipad and make it a part of a more consistent product line up….If that is the case then a near enough to a six inch screen size would simply be amazing for a new baby in the apple family…..and it would make real sense to have a size like this which would sit well in a purse or a coat pocket much more easily and become a more reading friendly screen and also enable videos and films to be more viewable and also contain large music files and not deny the ipod user any facility. If this were to happen then Apple could develop the Apple watch idea a lot further and have a larger current ipod touch format turned into a wafer thin gadget which could be carried.around the neck with a long cord (lanyard). It would make a whole lot of sense for Apple to make the watch idea go much much further by incorporating it with the ipod touch and have its product design team go much much further and make the watch more use able…. Some people don’t really like wearing a watch on the wrist but they might like to carry around a very thin ipod type gadget weighing very very little hanging around their neck …an idea worth considering…. even if it sounds a bit crazy written here….

I won’t disagree with you there, but iPods are mainly for children and teens, and those who can’t afford an iPhone. What would they name this new device? An iPad Mini Mini? Haha. I’d like a device that makes me seem like I have an iPhone.

I hope you will not get let down… Hope there will be the Plus sized ipod touch….but if Apple decided to give it a new outlook and joined the PMP with their ipad range then I hope they make it just a little bit larger and then perhaps name it BABY IPAD or MICRO IPAD…
But who knows what they plan to unveil on 16th October…. I just hope they will not forget people like us .

I CAN afford an iPhone and am not a teen nor a child. I don’t WANT an iPhone. It’s overpriced for my usage requirements as is the contract from a service provider.
I have a 3rd generation iPod that I still use daily and would consider upgrading to the iPod Touch 6G if it is released (at a reasonable price). I would not opt for an iPad Mini as its too big for my needs and must fit in my pocket.

        • Delphiglo

Yeah, the iPod Touch is a better deal, and it fits in your pocket.

they will kill the ipod touch line for sure next week there no sign of the ipod touch 6th we should have seen leaks already there no leaks

I think it’s way too early to discontinue the ipod touch. As long as iPhones are developed they’ll use recycled scraps for the ipod touch. There probably wasn’t a leak simply b/c this is how it always went for the last 7 years–new Iphone, new iPod touch.

    • Delphiglo

There weren’t any Apple Watch leaks until the day or two days before the event. And those were only schematics. I hope Apple doesn’t get rid of the iPod. Its a good device to mock the iPhone, and Retina iPads are expensive. But will the new iPod have Touch ID and NFC? That will make them expensive! Plus, I know department stores use iPod Touch to check out customers and find in-store products.

I’m nervous now! I expected them to release the 6th generation along side the iPhone; also not expecting the Apple Watch… Now that the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus look kinda like the 5th generation’s design, what will the 6th generation look like? I have doubts they will release a new generation iPod, but they need to. An iPod is a great alternative to an iPhone, which I use to act like an iPhone, since they’re so expensive! Also, no other major blogs even mentions a new iPod, which makes me believe it might be true. They somehow knew an Apple Watch would be announced… Even though iPods aren’t racking up as much revenue as before, it still makes profit. I have an old 4th generation, and if they announce a 6th generation, I know I’m going to buy it.

In my book IPOD as a name sits well in Apple’s History of products and for Apple to destroy that name while there is still some life in it would be UNQUESTIONABLY STUPID…. If there is any common sense resident in the APPLE ORCHARD then IPOD as a name will not be allowed to wither and die and so it would make a lot of sense for Sensible people in the Apple organisation to make sure that a sensible product exists for people to buy…..The words IPOD and IPAD are other names to remind people of an entity called APPLE ….and if profit motive is the only factor that a company employs in selling a product then they are a very strange set of people….even if everyone in the media world talks of Apple TV and Imac and apple watch and Apple Pay and IOS 8 etc . ….And so we just have to wait and see what they will do at Apple and what they will bring out…..and hope they don’t let us down…or shoot themselves in their corporate foot.

They should be able to continue with the Ipod Touch family if they discontinued the Ipod Classic. They still need to sell their originated music players. As every year is the same, this one would share the same look and design paralleled to the Iphone 6. Whether they’ll give us the option for display sizes, not sure. I’m confident they’ll give us the 128GB option too. But undeniably, we will certainly see a sixth generation.

    An iPod touch plus please!!!!
