PS4 dominates Xbox One in August sales again

By Alan Ng - Sep 12, 2014

Sony may be taking their time to deliver on promised features with PS4 update 2.0 on the horizon, but in terms of sales since launch they have a lot to be happy about. It’s just been announced by the NDP group that the PS4 has outsold the Xbox One for a staggering 8 months in a row.

This is a surprise turn of events compared to the last console war of course and despite Microsoft’s infamous u-turn regarding DRM, it looks like some consumers have not forgotten where their priority lies.

Microsoft meanwhile have just snapped up exclusives with Tomb Raider and FIFA 15 Legends, so there’s still plenty of reasons to be happy as an Xbox gamer. What is making Sony run away with 8 straight months of sales ahead of the Xbox One though?

The results have been recorded by GamesIndustry.biz and Sony have also boasted that while Madden NFL 15 was the best selling game of August, most gamers picked up the game on PS4 rather than Xbox One.

Microsoft will be keen to change the fortunes around for September and don’t forget that Destiny could play a key part in which way the sales will go again – will Sony’s exclusive content be yet another decisive factor?

Give us your reaction to the fact that Sony is leading Microsoft for 8 months in a row for PS4 Vs Xbox One sales. Is this surprising to you, or not?

“This is a surprise turn of events compared to the last console war of course and despite Microsoft’s infamous u-turn regarding DRM, it looks like some consumers have not forgotten where their priority lies.”
Which I am hoping is not forgotten easily. They were unbelievably anti-consumer last year. They didn’t 180 a single policy until they saw pre-order numbers, then they panicked. They looked right past petitions from their fanbase with signatures that numbered in the 100’s of thousands. They have no respect for their consumer base and deserve none in return. Xbox is simply Microsofts pet project that they throw money at.

    • Skeet

Not very Christian of you is it. Way to hold a grudge. I don’t know of any other company that has ever turned around so much in such a short space of time, and now they are possibly the most consumer centric company out there.
      Chill out dude!

      • Karl

Dude I don’t blame him. I think you need to chill out. Microsoft basically tried to screw over everyone even their loyal customers with a fast one. Now they are paying the price right now, I think they deserve it.

        • Skeet

How exactly did they try “to screw over everyone”? They were completely open and then changed everything due to feedback. They now even have a dedicated feedback site to bring more and more features that people want. They’re even changing things from feedback from their preview program.
There’s no reason now for anyone to be slating them now for thing they have rectified.

        • Karl

Yes that was because they were going to lose sales. MAJOR SALES because of their greediness. Yes I understand, but that is because they are learning from their mistake. Though that mistake won’t go away because we will always remember how we must be more careful when buying their products. Unfortunately they are paying the price big time still. In which I believe they deserve for not listening to their customers.

        • Skeet

So, Sony’s DRM scandal of 2005-2007, where they actually had a little program that would install from audio CD’s, and send info back to Sony, which they then released an uninstaller that just hid the program… They failed to mention anything about in the EULA… means your now going to burn your PS4???

        • Guest

I didn’t say that you guys had to destroy your systems.

        • Skeet

No, but since you’re so unforgiving in these matters, how could you possibly own or let anyone else play on a machine made by a company that has done something like this?

        • Josh101

That is a far-cry from the anti-competitve anti-consumer crap Microsoft tried to pull. Microsoft was giving away personal information to the NSA without warrant, willingly. A program to see if you had actual legal copies of music and disabling it is NOT the same. Nowhere near comparable.

        • Josh101

A rootkit scandal that would disable burned music. That is ONE thing Sony has done that was off. Hardly comparable to Microsoft and their plethora of anti-consumer tactics of the last 20 years. What about the T.O.S. that tells you directly they are going to gather your personal information to send you targeted ad’s on a pay-for system? Let me guess, removal of OtherOs? Thank Geohot for releasing the hyper-visor and PS3 keys. Anything else?

        • Karl

And it still shows that it is still hurting them.

        • GK15

People like him just don’t get it man. Either they hate MS and weren’t gonna buy an XB1 anyway, or they just don’t get it. I sat down and thought about it before I pre-ordered. And even with the online DRM, it wouldn’t have changed the way I game at all (I’ve been plugged in with an Ethernet for the last 12 years). The only thing it would have changed is that I wouldn’t even need discs for the games that I bought with discs. It woulda been perfectly fine but many people didn’t like it and they lost their sh*t. So MS changed it. I think it took them about a month to change it. But some ppl still wanna hate and not let it go. They probably hated MS/Xbox anyway, so who cares. XB1 is an awesome console and woulda been before as well.

        • Josh101

I had 2 360s, I was excited about hearing the Xbox reveal, then they crapped all over their consumers. Signed 7 petitions. They were perfectly content with their attitude of #dealwithit until after E3. That was 4 months. Not one… Then they saw pre-order numbers and panicked. Then they decided to be consumer friendly. They did not do it willingly for the consumer. Xbox is Microsofts pet project they throw money at, that is it. They attempted to destroy our right to the First sale doctrine. Far from just not having to use the discs. Every other product on the planet can be resold, games do not get special treatment.

        • GK15

Josh, I’ve seen your anti Xbox comments in the past, so your bias is clear to me.

They changed the DRM policy 1 week after E3, 5 months before launch. They revealed in May and changed the DRM policy in June. Google it, it’s out there.

MS responded to the backlash and consumer feedback, which proved widely unpopular. You were probably amongst the haters that were saying “M$ will change it back once they’ve suckered enough people into buying it.”

Lastly, you could still have sold your games back to Gamestop or any other registered retailer once you were done. Restrictive? Yes. Were you forced to buy it? No.

        • Josh101

The DRM rumors were floating back in February 2013. Google “PS4 drm february 2013” And you willl see articles where Sony said there will be no online drm while it was rumored XboxOne would have it. They stayed silent until after E3. That is 4 months Microsoft had to listen to their fans. They didn’t. They then saw pre-order numbers and panicked. That is not listening. MS supporters and Microsoft desperately want to believe we are just trolls but by the sales numbers they are assured it is NOT the case. They lost a ton of loyal fans. Sorry, #dealwithit.

        • GK15

I’m talking about actual announcements, not rumors. They had a game plan for an online XB1 and they announced it before changing it. That lasted about a month.

Also DRM, while a bit restrictive, did have some advantages. See family share, not needing to switch discs, possible Steam like sales, every third party dev being able to rely on ppl being online for cloud processing, etc.

As far as not listening to fans, you’re wrong. As someone else pointed out, they have a feedback site and even a polls app on the XB1 to give feedback. And XB1 gets updated monthly and keeps changing and getting better, just like the 360 did. Also I’ve personally spoken to Phil Spencer, Albert Pennello and Aaron Greenberg on Twitter. Phil was asking me and my friends what games we’d like to see on XB1.

PS4 is still selling more (I think mostly b/c of hype and less b/c of grudges from ppl like you), but it’s getting closer in the US. It’s good to see XB1 start to catch up in the US because it is a great console.

I agree MS had a plan that proved very unpopular and there was a lot of backlash, but get the f*ck over it dude. At this point you’re just hanging onto your hate and conjecture from last summer and spreading it on every video game article you see.

Meanwhile I’m enjoying my XB1. I’ve been gaming for almost 30 years and have owned or played most consoles over the years. XB1 is the best/most fun console I’ve ever had.

        • Karl

Look, man before you call people haters. You sound like you are an MS fanboy.

        • GK15

I am a MS fan. I like their products and think they have a lot of potential as a company. Lots of exciting things on the horizon. Big deal? And I’ve seen this guys posts over the last several months in many different articles. He hates on MS/Xbox all the time.

I chose to call him a hater rather than fanboy, pony or bronie. It wouldn’t matter what I called him tho, he still hates on MS/Xbox articles regularly

        • Karl

Although you are right about him being a hater. I understand, but the fact is that I don’t blame him he hates Xbox One and what MS tried to do and so many others have felt the same. That is what we are trying to say. Though the thing is you won’t understand because you just stated that you an MS fan, in which you will buy any of their products even though they will try to screw you over in front of your faces even though others listen to their customers and try not to rob you. Thus, Josh101 is just stating his opinion, so it makes your guy’s comments dumb for the fact that you just admitted that you are an MS fan. All in all, you will just argue and state that MS is better no matter the other opportunities there are. Yes I agree that MS has good products, but not all products as there Xbox One just shows us.

        • GK15

Well first off, I won’t buy any of their products just because I’m a fan. I’m a fan b/c I like their products and where they are going with their overall ecosystem. If I don’t like something, I don’t buy it.

Secondly, as I stated before I thought about it before deciding to go with Xbox One and like I said, the online requirement wouldn’t have changed the way I game. I’ve been plugged in with my Ethernet cord for the last 12 years and I could trade my games back to Gamestop when I was done with them. I liked the instant switching, not needing discs and not needing to switch inputs. So the opinion from people that they were “screwing everyone over” is just that, an opinion.

How about when Sony charged $600/$700 for the PS3? Or how about when they told people to get a second job to afford a PS3? Was that ok? How about the atrocious prices for PSNow which has horrible input lag? And Sony refusing to let you guys have EA Access b/c they said it isn’t a good value? Of course we all know it’s b/c they don’t want it competing w/ PSNow, but that’s ok right?

So we just completely disagree here. I think MS plan wasn’t properly communicated and it ultimately proved to be unpopular, so they changed it. Big deal. Xbox also has new leadership and a completely new gameplan if you were really that upset. But most haters are really just PS fanboys that wouldn’t have bought an Xbox anyway and spew hatred and FUD all over the internet.

        • Karl

Im, not a Sony fan, but what MS did is a major f*** up on there part. I believe each company has there defects. Except this was very bad and purposely made to cage us into handing our money to them.

        • Karl

If you know MS products well, then can you help me by finding a good modem for a router?

        • GK15

Idk. Can’t you get one from your ISP?

        • Karl

I can, but I don’t trust companies for advice over their products. I’m just trying to see what modems are best for routers because I am getting a Netgear Nighthawk and I have no idea if modems affect the speed of the internet depending on the pair that I choose of routers and Modems. Thanks anyways though.

        • GK15

No prob. I usually just go with my ISP. Best of luck

        • Josh101

No, but sorry, you are wrong in this instance. I give all my consoles and games to my nephew. Borrow games from friends. I don’t shop gamestop. Microsofts plan was to destroy our rights. Which was rumored for ffour months. They didn’t care what we thought. You know why people like Mattrick get paid alot? To be fired for taking the fall for just this. That is the way of American companies. Microsoft still doesn’t care. The fact they stayed silent was, caue it wa tre. They knew the backlash, they experienced it 4 months. Not to mention a load of other anticonsumer tactics.. PS Now, publishers set prices, PS33 price, cheapest blu ray player released at time, translation misinterpretation he said people will work more hours because the system was worth it. Which it was.How about Microsoft locking every feature behind a paywall for nearly a decade? One beig theWEB browser for christ sakes. Microsoft has been extremely anti-consumer for YEARS. Paying youtube personalities for positive reviews. Trying to force a always online camera w their consoles with known involvement in the PRISM scandal. I could go on… Forced acceptance of targeted ads in XboxOne T.O.S. when they said they wouldn’t. Need more? They are despicable.

        • GK15

I’m gonna go play some games on my Xbox One now

        • Josh101

Yea I thought so. Plain and simple Microsoft has been way more anticonsumer than any other electronic company in the world, especially this last year. Th majority of the people I have on my PS4 friend list came from 360, you and Microsoft can keep on hoping we are all just trolls who never owned xbox’s. It is far from the truth. :)

        • GK15

You’re out of your mind Josh. MS has the same stance on working with the government as any tech company. Double down on that tin foil tho. It might make you feel better.

I could sit here and go tit for tat with you on who’s opinion for going with which company is better, but you’re obviously a rabid “M$” hater and you’ve got your mind made up

        • Josh101

Really? What other company voluntarily built in back doors into their OS? What other company voluntarily gave away their customers information and was one of the first to sign up for it? Was Sony a part of the PRISM scandal? No, they weren’t. Who gave the NSA video feed into their video conferencing network? Microsoft…Willingly gave private information away.

        • GK15

          Wrong.

Microsoft said it only turned over data when served with a court order: “We provide customer data only when we receive a legally binding order or subpoena to do so, and never on a voluntary basis. In addition we only ever comply with orders for requests about specific accounts or identifiers. If the government has a broader voluntary national security program to gather customer data we don’t participate in it.”

An Apple spokesman said: “We have never heard of PRISM. We do not provide any government agency with direct access to our servers and any agency requesting customer data must get a court order,” he said.

Joe Sullivan, Facebook’s chief security officer, said it did not provide government organisation with direct access to Facebook servers. “When Facebook is asked for data or information about specific individuals, we carefully scrutinise any such request for compliance with all applicable laws, and provide information only to the extent required by law.”

A Google spokesman also said it did not provide officials with access to its servers. “Google cares deeply about the security of our users’ data. We disclose user data to government in accordance with the law, and we review all such requests carefully. From time to time, people allege that we have created a government ‘backdoor’ into our systems, but Google does not have a ‘back door’ for the government to access private user information.”

All similar responses. You can even check MS’s website for their official stance as well. Double down on that tin foil

        • Josh101

Yea, they said everyone who thought the rumors of Microsoft heavy on DRM and no used games was wearing a tinfoil hat. 4 months went by with thousands of tinfoil-hat jokes and what happened? EVERY rumor was true. So much for the tinfoil-hat jokes eh? Snowden already leaked all of this information that was true, if it wasn’t he wouldn’t be wanted for Treason, right? Microsoft also said their XboxOne wouldn’t even function if it didn’t have a camera hooked up to it. That was a lie. With them feeding the NSA Skype video calls, that’s not strange to you? They also lied about not using our personal information for targeting ad’s, it says right in the T.O.S., that they will. That’s not strange to you? Not in the least bit? Honestly, you think the companies are going to admit it? Yea, people like you are extremely naive.

        • Josh101

Matter of fact, it is selling because of hype alone eh? What about the article stating that a significant portion have never owned a playstation before? What about the PS4 having no gams? Why would people be buying PS4’s with no games? Why the hype? No, Microsoft lost a ton of Xbox fans. Fact.

        • Karl

Before you call people haters or fanboys. You seem to show your Xbox fanboism here.

        • GK15

So what if I’m a MS fan? He’s a Sony fan, I’m a MS fan. And he’s a regular Xbox hater in many articles so that’s what I called him

        • Mordarkeen

MS changed for your money….not you. Nuff said

        • ?????

Really? What does every company want? Money! Sony is doing all this just to make money!
          What a dumbass!

        • Mordarkeen

It all makes sense now. Your one of the die hard xbots that loves MS no matter how many times they bend your ass over. You will take it from them every time with a smile on your face, handing them your money and asking for more when their done. I see now that you definitely would have had no problems with MS had they went through the whole DRM, used game fee, always online and authentication for games policies. In fact im sure your one of the people who signed the petitions to bring the policies back! How many 360s did you end up buying last gen that got the RRoD? 5? 6? You skipped back to the store to get a brand new one each time thinking how much you love to give MS your cash.

        • ?????

I only pay $60 a year. Are you really too poor to afford that? I hated DRM, but you must still be in denial if you think its still here.
Stay asshurt that you’re always wrong.

        • Mordarkeen

If no DRM why is it a 4 hour install for a new Xbone system? To patch around EXISTING DRM in the system. Why is it 1 hour installs to play games if your connected online? DRM. PS4 takes seconds for new systems and games…DRM free!!! 10 million + know it.

        • ?????

Nope, just blindly making stuff up. Stay asshurt, kid.

        • Mordarkeen

Really? So when you buy a brand new Xbone it takes seconds to start it up and have it ready like the PS4? When games are installed online they don’t take an hour as opposed to offline where it takes 10 minutes because its actually reading off the disc? Maybe you don’t actually own one because everyone I know that does said it takes forever…there are videos on youtube showing the patch that it needs before it can be used. Yea its more likely they recalled all 10 million consoles and removed all the DRM from them instead of patching around it using Xbot logic here.

        • Mordarkeen

Of course its about money. But Sony didn’t act like tools on its reveal then 180 more times than the exorcists head spins around. They sold 10 million probably 12 million now since Destiny because they delivered what gamers want. And its not the idea of bad policies, TV and sports. Oh and great exclusives like Bloodborne, UC4 etc etc

        • ?????

They did all this, but still lose billions a year.
Don’t act like Xbox games aren’t good.

        • Mordarkeen

The money Sony lost has nothing to do about the PS4. Totally different divisions. They will be fine. Xbox has nothing i want that PS4 can already get. X1 owners cant say the same.

        • ?????

PS division is pretty much the only division that’s doing well. Sony as a whole is losing billions a year and selling off divisions. High chance of bankruptcy.
I’ve never seen anybody on Xbox be jealous of what Ps4 has. Xbox One has pretty much every feature PS4 has, plus a lot more. Sorry, but PS4 is about gaming, and barely any exclusives are even good.

        • Mordarkeen

I know you wish they would go bankrupt so they would stop smacking that xflops ass in the console wars but sorry they are here to stay. You don’t see Xbots jealous because they love whatever garbage MS releases. The rest of the 360 fans with a brain already bought the best money could buy and it was a PS4. That’s how they hit 10 million so quickly and it was with a large ex Xbox population snapping them PS4s up. Your must not know what good games are because you think trash like Ryse and Titanfall are good exclusives. Yet they can be bought and played for PC. Real exclusives are Bloodborne, Wild, Rime,The Order, UC4 and whatever else is coming in the future. LOL
“sorry the PS4 is about gaming” That is the dumbest comment I have ever read and that’s saying a lot coming from you. Isnt a console bought for gaming? Oh I forgot you all love your TV TV TV SPORTS TV then gaming.

        • ?????

LMFAO it sold so well because of the hype, it can be bought in most countries, and they just played from MS bad press. You still never played Ryse or Titanfall, lmao.
You’re retarded, I meant that since PS4 is for gaming, it should have good games, right? Nope. Sorry, troll harder.

        • Mordarkeen

Ryse, Titanfail, everything else multi plats or on PC…..nothing good on the xflop

        • ?????

Still never played them? Of course, since you’re a blind fanboy that hates on everything else.
Knack: garbage game for 12 year olds.
Killzone: mediocre FPS, laggy, and a halo wannabe.
ISS: was good at first, but started getting redundant very quickly.
          MLB: just another baseball game.
TLOU: only game I’ve truly enjoyed on PS4.
Unlike you I’ve played all these games. Troll harder.

        • Josh101

No they weren’t completely open. They were silent unti after E3. Letting their employees say #dealwithit and “Why would I live there?” right until they saw pre-order numbers. That is not listening.

        • Karl

Exactly, what I was saying. This is not fanboism, we are customers that love games and one side try to screw everyone over in order to milk more money out.

        • ?????

          Changed 10 days after E3.
          Yet another asshurt fanboy.

        • Josh101

You are a month late and also didn’t read everything posted in this thread. You have failed. Pre-order numbers came in around that time, that’s why they changed. There was a whole 4 months between reveal of their anti-consumer policies and E3 where they said nothing. While thousands of people signed petitions, including me. Hell yes I’m a fanboy of Sony. Who couldn’t be? Sony Cross-buy, PS+ with games across PS4/PS3/PS Vita for one payment, Project Morpheus, PS Now, Shareplay, CD’s/DVD’s/Bluray. What does Microsoft have? Snap? My Sony 50″ Bravia has “Snap” since 2 years ago, it’s called “Picture AND picture.” Not to be confused with “Picture IN picture.”
