iOS 8 public release reality check

- Sep 8, 2014

The reality is an iOS 8 public release date won’t be when some Apple fans think and while there will be a download going live in under 18 hours time, it’s going to be for the Gold Master. It shocks us how the likes of certain blogs, including The Mirror, don’t understand Apple’s launch patterns that almost certainly stay the same for the iOS 8 public release.

If you read any blogs today claiming a public download might come on Wednesday, just ignore them as they are very wrong. Apple need to give developers a little time with the Gold Master, which won’t go live with release notes in the portal until after the iPhone 6 event.

While it’s true that Apple like to release major mobile operating system upgrades on a Wednesday, as they did last year, you can expect this to be next week.

Apple will give developers longer than 24 hours with the GM build and if they stick to the regular Wednesday for iOS 8 going to public, then the release date will be September 17th. This will be followed by iPhone 6 being available to buy on Friday, September 19th or 26th in select countries.

As you can see in the tweets above, it seems like some people still think they will get hands-on this week. Sadly, they will be disappointed. What we will get tomorrow is a lot of insight into the new features contained in iPhone 6, the Plus version, and a closer look at the Gold Master before it goes live for everyone else next week.

Are you looking forward to the iOS 8 public release date? We previously mentioned the expected week, although it’s now expected to arrive on Sept 17th. Official confirmation is less than 15 hours away.
