Apple TV 4G wait breaks release pattern

By Updated on

There’s those that envision something special is on the way with a 4th generation Apple TV and in most circumstances it’s pure speculation, especially after a lack of leaks unlike you’ll see with the iPhone 6.

The main reason we are seeing an expectation of something big with Apple TV 4G is due to such a long wait for this next upgrade. The same could be said for iPod touch 6G, although in that situation Apple has released a new generation within a 2 year pattern that’s due this fall.

Looking at the Apple TV 4G wait – This is the longest wait yet and it’s worrying some people about the future of Apple TV thanks to the release pattern getting shorter each time, until the 4th gen. It seems analysts and fans are split on what this could mean, and the possibilities include Apple TV being discontinued or the biggest update yet is about to release.

Personally, we find it very unlikely that a 4G Apple TV wouldn’t release considering the expansion with app partnerships. When you look at how many apps are on the USA Apple TV software it’s clear a lot of effort is being made, then you have the push with content partnerships and also how a big change is needed with arranging these in a better way.

The first Apple TV released on January 9, 2007. This was followed with the next generation 3 years and 8 months later. The 3rd generation Apple TV released 18 months after the 2nd, and then we saw a revision to that model on January 28, 2013. This means the gap between upgrades reduced each time until the wait for Apple TV 4th generation, which now has a gap of 19 months since the last revision and 29 months since the last full generation.

If we imagine Apple is continuing to create content partnerships and this points to a big future with their TV content plans, then this leaves us with the outlook that means something big is about to happen with the hardware.

The Apple TV 4G will likely be the biggest upgrade yet and bring many of the desired features like native gaming, especially following Amazon’s Fire TV doing this before Apple. Imagine seeing Apple step into TV gaming in a big way with the large amount of iOS apps and dedicated developers?

We’d love to hear what would be a massive change for Apple TV 4G in your opinion, an upgrade that would make you want to purchase it, so hit the comments with your thoughts.

I hope Apple, indeed, opens itself to more third party development, user customization, and allows use of USB (3.0 minimum please). App Store access, gaming, etc.
