2015 BMW M3 vs. Alpina D3 – Gas vs. diesel

By Updated on

Top Gear hate two things, flappy paddle transmissions and diesels, although over the past few years they have started to change their minds, as technology has progressed at such a rate that these things have now seen vast improvements. Double clutch systems make changes between gears that much quicker, which means hardly any lag time at all, while advances in diesel engines, and the diesel itself have made this fuel source a far more viable option.

It is the latter that has our interest because if we were to go back a few years the choice of going for a car with a diesel engine meant one of two things, and that was to either save money at the pumps, or to tow massive loads. What makes us laugh is that as diesel has become a more popular options, some Governments have decided to increase the price you pay, and so engine builders have had to come up with new ways in order to make diesel still the far cheaper option.

To give you an idea of just how much diesel cars have improved we thought we would share with you a video that helps to highlight just that. The video is a 2015 BMW M3 vs. Alpina D3 showdown just to see how petrol compares to diesel.

In the past, such a showdown would have been an easy win for the petrol engine, and while we will not spoil the surprise for you, we can tell you that it was educational.

The numbers – The 2015 BMW 3-Series is powered by a 435 horsepower petrol engine, and has been worked on by the M Division. As for the Alpina D3 model, this diesel only pumps out 345 horsepower, although does have more torque.

While I am not certain if I would go for the diesel, one thing is certain, the tests of each vehicle below shocked me seeing as though the cheaper and less powerful Alpina D3 performed better than expected.
