The partnership between BMW and Toyota is expected to produce two sports cars; the first is the new Toyota Supra, with the other rumored to be the all-new Z model, possibly the Z5. We have already been treated to a few details as to their designs, but what of the powertrain?
Details have come to light about the new Toyota Supra powertrain, which we suspect will be very similar to that of the 2015 Acura NSX, although hope reliability is improved considering the recent fire of the NSX during testing.
According to Australian website Motoring the next generation Supra will be powered by a BMW engine, whereas Toyota will take care of the Hybrid system, along with fuel cell technology.
This system is not going to be like a Prius, but rather a more complex system, which is rumored to consist of a 2.0-liter BMW engine and three electric motors, which is a very similar set-up to the Acura NSX.
Why three electric motors? There is to be one motor at the front and rear, and the other will be integrated to form part of the standard engine and transmission, although we have no details as to what the benefits of this will be.
We don’t expect the Toyota Supra to go to market until 2017 and so technical specs will be tested to see what works best, although having BMW build the gasoline engine and Toyota concentrate on the Hybrid system does seem like a perfect match, seeing as though they are experts in these fields. Maybe the German car manufacturer could even turn to its M division to work on the engine for the new Supra, considering it is a sports car after all?
