New Smart Fortwo engines key to success

Later today will see the next-generation Smart Fortwo and Forfour revealed in Berlin, and before that we get to see a few designs of these vehicles, although they only gave us an idea of some of the early ones. However, yesterday saw three new sketches appear that gave us a better idea of the Smart Fortwo exterior and interior changes, and so we wonder how close the final design will be to these?

Smart Fortwo engines key to success – We are intrigued to see what Smart has planned with the Forfour, although most eyes will be on the Forfour because it has always been a car that owners have had a love hate relationship with. The one problem that crops up time and again is its engines.

From what we have been hearing, the new Smart Fortwo and even the Forfour will only sell well if there are significant upgrades in the engine department, as well as a decent transmission.

The 3-cylinder engine in the outgoing models is not enough to keep most owners happy, and the transmission was not known as the best fit for the engine. It is for this reason why a better engine and transmission is required.

We’ve heard rumors that these new vehicles being revealed later today will get two new engines, both of which from Renault. The first is thought to be a 1.0 liter packing 70 horsepower and the other, the 899 cc 3 cylinder, but with a turbo helping it to produce 90 horsepower.

Having never driven one of these Smart vehicles it is hard to say if the current engines and transmission is as bad as people make out, although it wouldn’t hurt Smart to make improvements in this area seeing as though engine technology has moved on.
