New iPhone emojis are on the way for a major 2014 update, but if you thought these additions were only for iOS and Android phones you’d be very wrong. You can expect to see new emojis for iPad this year as well, and this should even include the new middle finger emoji on both tablet and phone.
This is all thanks to Unicode 7.0, although the graphics for each iPad emoji will need to be created by Apple and on other platforms by the developers for each brand. Unicode’s character coding system is more of a reference on how to create them, so this is why a Nexus 7 messaging app compared to the iPad iMessage app will feature slightly different emojis.
Within the Android and iOS update, you’ll find over 250 new emoji possibilities and it’s not clear at this time if either Google or Apple plan to include religious emojis within their updates.
Phones Review highlight the fact that iOS 8 will see a public release within September, which could be a perfect time for adding new emojis for iPad and iPhone. When iOS 8 beta 4 arrives for developer download we’ll check to see if any new emojis were added, but considering the Unicode 7.0 update arrived in July, it’s unlikely the new emojis will launch until at least the Gold Master or even iOS 8.1 next year.
If the emojis for iPad and iPhone arrive with the middle finger symbol, will you be using it on occasion? We’ve embedded a video below looking at the new emojis and also another explaining the history of emoji, which interestingly is told in emojis.
