Today would have been the 185th birthday of Honinbo Shusaku, who as many of you will know was regarded as the greatest Go player to have ever lived. Google thought that they would show its respect by producing a special Google Doodle, which is a nice touch. However, the best way to remember the great player is to try out the game he loved so much for yourself.
To help celebrate the birthday of Honinbo Shusaku, then why not download a Go app onto your Android or iOS device, and no – we are not talking about the Sky Go app.
Go Free – is the app that is available to download from the Google Play Store and as you can see, has a pretty impressive user review score. This is a rich strategy game with simple ancient rules, which some would say is the ultimate thinking game.
There are 10 levels of difficulty to the game, although if you are new to the game, then the handy rules, hints and handicaps section will come in handy. The Go app for Android supports both smartphones and tablets and is completely free.
Go for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is very much the same as the Android version, although iTunes does offer far more details about the history of the game, and how to play it. What we like about this app is how you can mix old with new, meaning the tradition of the game is not lost and opens Go up to a far bigger audience with an app because you can play anyone online.
Have you ever tried playing Go, if not, then give it a go today – excuse the pun.
