Mac OS X 10.10 Mail junk update filters more spam

By Daniel Chubb - Jun 4, 2014

One major update to Apple’s Mac OS X Yosemite version 10.10 is with the Mail app, and the fact that it filters a lot more spam than Mavericks did even after setting many mail rules to block spam emails getting through the junk filter.

Previously, the Mavericks mail app would miss a lot of junk email that allowed smart spammers to bypass the filters with tricks like using images rather that certain text to block with the rules. Add to that many different domains with new ones arriving everyday, it made deleting emails a daily task for many Mac users and especially business/work users with a number of emails targeted by scammers.

Only OS X 10.10 Yosemite preview 1 – it should be noted that this is only the first beta and there could be a number of changes yet to impact the Mail junk filter. One problem we’ve noticed is how much email is heading to spam, which seems to be almost all of it, so in this case it is good to setup VIPs for contacts you really need to get email from.

Making sure your most important contacts are a VIP in Mac Mail will let emails from these people keep out of your Junk box. This isn’t the perfect solution thanks to some emails you wouldn’t want as a VIP, although they still go in junk and this includes Twitter, press releases, and emails from people you are yet to speak to and want to receive email from.
