There has been a few developments since our article about Apple Continuity not working when using iOS 8 Handoff to Mac OS X 10.10. We’ve now seen one way to fix the issues being experienced by some of the 9 million developers that potentially could be using the beta software.
Apple explained that Continuity should just work “without configuration changes”, although this hasn’t been the case with the first preview of Mac OS X Yosemite and beta 1 of iOS 8. The release notes reveal these new features should be working from the first betas.
The screenshot below was taken from a 2013 iMac running OS X 10.10 Yosemite and from within the System Preferences, then after hitting the General Tab. When you look down the settings within this menu you will see a box not ticked called, “Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices”.
After enabling this option we’ve been informed by our developer that the iPad and iPhone icons started to show in the toolbar, which didn’t happen after playing around for a few hours before within settings for both iOS 8 and OS X 10.10. The next update, in preview 2 and beta 2 should resolved some of the problems faced with devices showing intermittently.
We’ve included another iMac OS X 10.10 screen grab above that reveals the Safari iPad icon appearing at the bottom of the screen, and this reveals itself after opening Safari on the Apple iPad tablet. You should note that when an iPhone 5 and iPad mini were both inside Safari, only one icon would show at a time with the other being canceled out.
Once you click the icon, it opens up Safari on the desktop computer with the tabs currently open on your iPad. There is a few broken connections from time to time, and these should get fixed as developers report their findings over the coming days.
