Sony Xperia Tablet Z update Android 4.4.2, sporadic battery issues

By Peter Chubb - May 22, 2014

If you have been wondering why on earth there has not been a Xperia Tablet Z Android 4.4.2 update as yet, then you might have noticed that this latest edition of KitKat started to rollout yesterday. This is certainly great news, but this update will be made to feel old if 4.4.3 is released tomorrow as rumored.

However, let us not take away the fact that the Xperia Tablet Z will now run and have an overall far better feel following this latest update. However, we have heard from a few readers that they have experienced Sony Xperia Tablet Z battery life problems since updating to Android 4.4.2, although this does not seem to be a widespread issue.

Looking on the Sony Mobile website, it isn’t just the Tablet Z that received the update yesterday, as the Xperia Z, ZL and ZR also got the update. For those of you with the Xperia T2 Ultra, E1 and M2, you will have to wait until July before the update becomes available to you.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z update Android 4.4.2 unleashed

Now that you have updated your Sony Xperia device to Android 4.4.2 KitKat, you will now notice some updated features, such as several UI adjustments to Messaging, Smart Social Camera now appears on these first generation Z devices, as well as Battery Stamina Mode, although this has made battery life worse for some people, unless they have forgot to active this feature?

For full details on these changes, then we ask that you visit the Sony Mobile website. Going back to Android 4.4.3, we will keep you fully informed if this will go live tomorrow for the Nexus 4, 5, 7 and 10.

Sony updates Xperia Tablet Z to Android 4.4.2

Yes 4.4.2 has killed my Xperia Z phone. Only lasts 4 hours and its just sat there pulling the odd email and twitter feeds. Very disappointing

  • same as everyone, it’s a battery disaster. I read somewhere that uninstalling Skype may help, which it obviously doesn’t.
BTW, these are not “sporadic battery issues” as the headline misleadingly suggests, but permanent battery drain on Xperia Z.

My husband and I are having the same battery drain issues on our Xperia Z’s that everyone else is describing. Both say that Google play is consuming 90% of the battery life which seems super excessive, but I’m really not sure what it was before the update. I’m very disappointed, I don’t know what Sony was thinking releasing this update like this. We’re going to wait for a.few weeks in hopes that another firmware update will be released that will solve this problem. If not it looks like we’ll be doing factory resets. :-(

The update has seriously ruined my Z. My battery was fine before the update and now the battery lasts about 6 hours from a full charge before switching itself off. I wasn’t using it and had sent the grand total of 4 texts in that time!

I’m the excact same stamina mode dosnt work and going in to my settings it’s saying google play services are using over 90 % of my battery and in the space of 4 hours it was needing charged

  • Anton

I have the same issues :(((
Stamina mode doesn’t do anything, messages and updates coming even when phone is locked. Battery drain is ridiculous – few hours and the phone is off… And it becomes very very hot!

Stamina mode no loner works. Everytime I try to enable it, it does nothing. Camera freezes when trying to view recently taken pictures, phone runs hot, facebook freezes, phone freezes when attempting to manage apps, update center wont let me download the album update. This update has completely jacked up my phone!
