2014 MacBook Pro Broadwell upgrade patience

Apple recently updated its MacBook Air to include a new, faster processor, as well as a minor price reduction, but that was about it. There are still rumors that an all-new model will be released later this year, possibly alongside the 2014 MacBook Pro upgrade.

While we are uncertain if a 2014 MacBook Pro refresh will happen or not, there is a good chance it will because Apple seems intent on refreshing the MacBook line each year now. We are not certain as to what Apple will change, but there has been huge speculation that it could come with the new Intel Broadwell processor.

Some of you have been employing a great deal of patience when it comes to buying a new MacBook Pro this year, as some of you feel that now would not be the right time to buy a MacBook Pro considering a new model is expected in five months time. We know that this is a long time to wait, but the prospect of a 2014 MacBook Pro Broadwell upgrade is worth the wait.

2014 MacBook Pro Broadwell upgrade

There is no doubt in our minds that Apple will bring Broadwell to the MacBook, but knowing when is a tough question to answer. This is because Intel’s upcoming processor was meant to have started production already, but a delay (see video below) has meant we might not see it in devices until late 2014, or even 2015. An interesting article says that Broadwell will bring with it new possibilties because the chip will be able to open up a computers speed capabilities, although not certain this will be apply to the MacBook Pro, but rather desktops instead. If this is the case, then the iMac could benefit hugely from a Broadwell upgrade.

However, the most recent reports suggest that the new processor is more likely to be made available in late 2014. If this is the case, then there is still the chance that the 2014 MacBook Pro refresh could be released in October with Broadwell, although if Intel cannot make this CPU available until a month or two later, then we would assume that Apple would delay the 2014 MacBook Pro release date, as it would be a silly move to bring the new MacBook to market without the latest Intel chip.

The Intel Broadwell delay cannot be ignored. Usually the desktop variants come out sooner than the mobile, but as far as I know, no OEM has received any Broadwell chip. I am guessing Early or Mid 2015 before there will be a Broadwell-based Macbook Pro. At most there will be a Haswell refresh (0.1Ghz increase).
