Ram 1500 redesign depends on 2015 Ford F-150 success

By Updated on

There seems to be some confusion as to the RAM 1500 roadmap because several rumors seem to suggest that a minor update will happen in 2015, with a major update slated for 2017 and a next generation Ram 1500 redesign on the cards for 2019. However, a new piece of news seems to contradict this a little.

Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, said that he will be looking at the success of the 2015 Ford F-150 to see if they would consider using an all-aluminum design of the 2017 redesign. It is that date we have an issue with, as it was first assumed the redesign was coming in 2019?

Maybe we are reading too much into it because the 2017 Ram 1500 is going to receive a major update, and so should be classed as a redesign, although the 2019 will still be a completely new model and will be known as a 2020 model.

Car and Driver reports that Marchionne has said that he currently has better uses for aluminum than using it on a pickup, but he has not ruled the use of the metal out. It makes perfect sense for Chrysler to wait to see how the public receives the aluminum 2015 Ford F-150 seeing as though there has been a mixed response to the use of the material on a truck.

Ford could have jumped the gun by using aluminum and in the process ruin the F-150 name, although we highly doubt that. Having said that, it is a wise move for Chrysler to play the waiting game to see if the market is ready for such a change, something that we know Apple does and more often than not were right to play the waiting game.

There is however an underlining concern, and that is how the use of aluminum could make the Ram 1500 more expensive, and so some of you hope that Chrysler choosing not to follow this path. The question is, does the RAM 1500 need the mileage boost when compared to the F150, as we know it is lighter and improves fuel-efficiency, but not strength?

I just traded in my 2010 F-150 Crewcab 4×4 and got the exact Dodge in the picture above. 2014 Ram 1500 Lariat. Have always had Ford’s, but this is a gorgeous truck! incredible ride, After having this Ram, I’ll never go back to a Ford. Had nothing but problems with that F-150.
