First there was the Ford Cortina, then the Sierra and then the Mondeo, all of which I have owned. All three models are iconic cars, but none ever broke the mold in terms of turning things on its head, although that will soon change when the 2014 Ford Mondeo 1.0 EcoBoost version will be introduced later this year.
We know there will be some engineers saying that you are asking too much from such a small engine by putting a turbo on it, but these people are stuck in the past because technology has moved along at such a fast rate over the past 10 years or so.
To give you an idea of just how well things have evolved The Sunday Times has come up with an infographic that looks at how the 2014 Ford Mondeo 1.0 compares to a 1997 Mondeo 2.0-litre.
On the first line we see the size of each engine, then how many cylinders they have, then the horsepower followed by their fuel consumption.
2014 Ford Mondeo 1.0 vs. old 2.0 litre model – The numbers are as follows, 3 cylinders compared to 4, 138 bhp compared to 128 and 67 mpg motorway miles compared to 46.3.
The smaller, yet more powerful engines, thanks to the help of a turbo are becoming more popular, especially with Ford. The Fiesta and Focus already make use of this new engine technology, and so does the F-150 in the US.
However, this will be the first time that Ford will use it in one of their larger family cars. It does seem strange to think that the engine in the new Mondeo will have almost the same displacement as the Vauxhall Adam and the Fiat 500 and Panda models.
This is the beauty with dropping a turbo into the mix because you can use much smaller engines to help deliver more power and increase fuel consumption, which we have seen with the new Formula One cars, even though there is a sacrifice in sound.
