Oculus Rift brings Game of Thrones to life

HBO’s leading show Game of Thrones has been brought to life at an exhibit with the virtual reality head mounted display, Oculus Rift. Attendees of SXSW can sample the experience of scaling The Wall which is 700 feet tall, made of ice and happens to be the structure which keeps out the White Walkers and Wildlings.

Participants of HBO’s “Ascend the Wall” enter a replica of the elevator cage which transports Night’s Watch members from the top to the bottom of The Wall. Due to technical difficulties the exhibition could not replicate the actual Wall so Oculus Rift was used as a replacement instead. The Next Web’s Josh Ong was lucky enough to try out this exclusive experience and he said his “mind was literally blown.”

Oculus Rift combined with headphones and 4D effects such as faux wind and physical shaking make the experience feel almost real. The only giveaway with this experience which can’t be hidden is when you put your arms out in front of you to touch and Oculus Rift does not display them. Other than that you get a wide view looking out across the frozen wasteland Beyond the Wall, which surely must feel incredible.

Game of Thrones fans across the world including myself will be itching to try out this experience, unfortunately the exhibition is exclusive to guests of SXSW. The Game of Thrones tour will however visit Northern Ireland, Rio de Janeiro, Toronto and Oslo, the Scale the Wall experience may be sampled by lucky visitors at these exhibitions.

This virtual reality technology is pushing new limits and is starting to shape a next generation of entertainment. We understand that Sony are preparing to bring virtual reality to gaming with their headset accessory for the PlayStation 4. Oculus Rift is laying down the benchmarks in virtual reality and should bring with it the viewing experience of the future.

What are your thoughts on virtual reality technology, is this going to be the next groundbreaking form of entertainment?
