FIFA 14 Ultimate Team addiction with £4,000 bill

By Alan Ng - Mar 3, 2014

The popular FIFA 14 Ultimate Team mode is in the headlines now and not for the right reasons. While we all love opening FIFA 14 Ultimate Team Player Packs, it appears that some consumers are unhappy that these packs can lead to an addiction and high credit card bills.

This has happened to one mother in the UK, who has appeared in the limelight after her 13-year old son has managed to rack up a shocking £4,000 bill opening FIFA 14 Ultimate Team packs.

Even worse, the consumer has told the BBC that around £1,000 was spent in just 24 hours and that EA are at fault for not setting enough restrictions to make it more clear to young players that real money transactions are always taking place when purchasing coins.

As you can imagine, this has created a rather heated debate on actually who is at fault here. Social media has been running wild and there are many comments from others who say that the parent shouldn’t have given her son access to her credit card.

One quote from the parent reads:

“They must be making an awful lot of money out of the misfortune of other people and I think they make it too easy”

Would you say this that this is true, or do you believe that it is not EA’s responsibility to police Ultimate Team purchases in a better manner?

One thing we would say, is that EA should definitely increase the odds during FIFA 14 Ultimate Team pack openings to find a rare player, especially if gamers are blowing these kinds of crazy money just to get that inform or TOTY player.

How many FIFA 14 players are willing to agree that he probably didn’t even get Messi or Ronaldo from those £4,000 worth of coins? Give us your reaction and opinions on this story – who is to blame?

As a parent there are options to password protect your credit card info on the system itself. I blame the parent. How many hours is he alone playing FIFA 14 to be able to run up a 7000 dollar bill. The mom needs to take responsibility here.

The parent is at fault but also fifa Fut can increase the odds of getting a high profile player in a pack I buy packs my self but can’t get a player above 86 Not even a team of the week player.what I see so far with fut when I spend coins to by a player like Dani alves or higher rated I play a game online and buy a PAC when promo PACs are selling and I will get the same player I just bought from the transfers market in the PAC so what I do now I just buy PACs when the promos are out and I don’t put my bank card on my game I use psn cards . That kid at that age shouldn’t even have access to his mother credit card… The game world has change when playing games online u have to have cash and most gamers think u can’t enjoy with out spending cash.when playing fut and go online u find other gamers with top rated players while you on the other hand has the low rated players so it’s not a blance field even when sometimes u be having a better game than the gamer with the top rated player but in the end you losse so its a erge to spend trying to get top rated players.

Although EA is an evil empire of gaming, but this, I blame clearly the parents, for even putting a credit card on a gaming system for a child and gamers because it just shows a lack of self control. Although its just a way to make easy money, FIFA is not the only studio that does that. FUT can be fun and playable without money, and FIFA doesn’t seem to stump the experience by making you pay. People just want to skip to the end, instead of working for something. Parents should keep their credit card away from gaming systems, and gamers should wait instead of paying to get somewhere. EA is not at fault for introducing a fun experience, and enable the chance to use real money to get in the game faster.
