Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 vs Nook HD+ is no contest

By Updated on

Earlier on this month we took a look at how the popular Nook HD+ compared against the even more popular Amazon Kindle Fire HD. Now though, we wanted to show you how Amazon’s upgraded model fairs against Barnes and Noble’s tablet, with a brief Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 Vs Nook HD+ review for you to watch.

It’s clear that Amazon has really hit their stride at the moment. After launching the Kindle which originally only offered e-book capabilities, we’ve now reached a stage where Amazon’s Kindle Fire HDX tablets can offer serious competition to the likes of the iPad Air, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 and soon to be released Nexus 10 2013 model.

The Amazon Kindle Fire HDX is also a consumer favorite as it’s selling for an incredible price. A price tag of $349 is over $100 cheaper than the 16GB iPad Air, although it doesn’t come close to matching the unbelievably cheap Nook HD+ which is just over $160 at various retailers.

Having said that, the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9-inch tablet offers significantly better hardware specs out of the box, compared to the Nook HD+. These include a quad-core 2.2Ghz processor with 2GB of RAM, compared to the Nook HD+ which only has a dual-core 1.5Ghz processor with 1GB of RAM.

Other differences include an 8MP rear camera on the Kindle Fire HDX, but no rear camera on the back of the Nook HD+. It’s clear that the Nook HD+ is no match for the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 in terms of hardware performance.

Then again the Nook HD+ still has access to the Google Play Store to download any apps that the Kindle Fire HDX can. So for the average consumer, this is still fantastic for a tablet that only costs around $160 compared to the $349 Kindle Fire HDX 8.9.

We’ve incldued a brief video review below, giving you a further analysis of both devices if you need it. If you have picked up either of these tablets over the busy shopping period, let us know how you are getting on so far.

You’re comparing apples to oranges. The Nook HD+ is last year’s model, and should be compared to last year’s Kindle Fire HD 8.9 (not this year’s Kindle Fire HDX 8.9).

  • WZ

There is not a camera at all on the Nook HD+. Get your facts straight.

    • danie

he says theress no camera on the nook hd+. learn to read before being rude.

    • Wanda

The camera is the only improvement I would like for my Nook. I have the 9″Hd and love it!

What about the glare on each model ?It seems like there would be more glare on the kindle fire. This could be a deal breaker. As these are designed for reading books you do not want a glare. A glare will lead to a nice headache. For book reading nook wins hands down.

Rich is correct, you should be comparing the Nook HD+ to the Kindle HD because of the fact that the HDX was made only recently whereas the HD+ has been out for a while. For it’s value, the HD+ is a fantastic tablet with an incredible display and power enough to play pretty much any of games that you would want to play on the Google store. Movies look fantastic on it, books read like a charm, the colors really pop when displaying comics, and the number of formats it supports allows for a great deal of functionality. It’s not a bad tablet for the $150 price range.

I don’t like the kindle fire had one and had problems charging it. It only has a one yr warranty so when it happened I couldn’t return it and they don’t fix them

  • Madison

I just purchased a nook HD for $79 brand new. No comparison when it comes to that amazing price

I read that the kindle fire only has limited access to the google play store as Amazon regulates what apps you’re allowed to download.

ummm why are you comparing products that are obviously not competitors. The nook costs half what the hdx costs. A better comparison would be the nook versus the kindle fire HD.

Wait wait…Your’re complaining because it’s titled nook vs kindle? Seriously? Dude, it’s the same review, same everything just different order. Get over yourself.

Great comparison….basically the same type of tablet….Nook HD+ has a 9 in screen and the Kindle has an 8.9in screen….the Kindle has a much faster processor,so you can play more games and watch movies…..but it doesn’t have the google play store…..Kindle has a slight advantage when it comes to picture quality plus it has a camera when the Nook doesn’t…..but if I get one it will be used mainly for books, magazines, and maybe some music so in the end they both do books and mags the same….so why pay for something that will more than likely not be used….ie…watching movies, playing games….taking pictures…..so the Nook makes a lot more sense to me….thanks for the comparison!!!! Huge help!!!!
