PS4 getting MP3, CD to counter Music Unlimited fears

By Updated on

Last week you may have read a worrying fact on the PS4 console not coming with support for MP3 files or CD playback. This was a nightmare prospect for music fans at launch, but we’re pleased to say that Sony has listened to the criticism and are planning to add these features into the PS4 at a later date.

To recap, we told you about this issue when Sony released an FAQ detailing the available features that will ship with the console at launch. Unlike the PS3, MP3 and CD support were not on the list, leading many consumers to question some of Sony’s motives.

This motive was in relation to the company’s Music Unlimited service, which most you will know costs a subscription fee to use each month. As you can imagine, many gamers were under the assumption that the main reason that MP3 and Audio CD support wasn’t available on the PS4 was solely due to Sony’s need to push Music Unlimited onto consumers.

The good news is that this theory has been KO’ed by Sony. The popular Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed in a recent audio interview that both missing features will make it into the PS4 with a post-release patch. To give you a idea of what he said, here’s a useful quote:

“The biggest surprise for us all internally at Sony was there are so many people who passionately reacted to our announcement that there’s no MP3 support or CD support on day one. It’s not like we actively decided let’s not do this feature so people will have to subscribe to Music Unlimited.”

We think it’s great that Sony acted so quick on this. They could clearly see that consumers were not happy about the lack of MP3 support on the PS4, but have made amends straight away. The big question is how long it will take to get this update onto the system after launch.

Give us your thoughts on this – are you delighted that MP3 and Audio CDs will feature on the PS4 after all?

I knew it! Its all party of Sony’s Evil plan to get us to subscribe to music unlimited!

yep cause they definatley said that in the article, did you even read it, dont see why people would cancel pre-orders over music, it is a games console and they overreacted like your not going to pay that much and then get mad over just music, phones and other things already do this and its stupid that they reacted that way no wonder sony was suprised

Now, if they just provide DLNA support, it will be perfect. I’m getting PS4 on day one anyway (which for us in Australia is 29 November), but would like to see DLNA support as it would be a retrograde step from the PS3 if it lacks it.

  • Maybe ??

Looks like I just may get one again now, dont want to be forced into an XBox. Otherwise new PS3 for me as GT6 will run on 3 just nice and will stick with media server !
