Every time Apple release a new tablet the competition has to sit up and take notice, which is just what happened last year with the launch of the iPad mini. This was new territory for Apple to have a tablet so small, but it worked and took some of the market share from rivals, and they plan to do the same this year.
Apple makes things difficult from the start because the current and new iPad mini 2 has a 7.85-inch display, and so will have to compete with the 7-inch market because there is greater choice. So what 7-inch tablets should be looking over their shoulders with the arrival of the 2nd generation iPad mini?

The first thing that Apple needs to address is price because there have been rumors to suggest the iPad mini 2 price could be a little more because of hardware improvements. However, this might be a hard pill to swallow, and could also turn people to Android.
Not only that, but there has been an influx of new tablets in the 7-inch range and their pricing has been more aggressive this year, something Apple needs to consider.
We could go through a whole list of tablets that need to worry about the iPad mini 2, but there are two that stand out to us, the 2013 Nexus 7 and the new Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch version.
Based on what we know so far, the new model will come with an upgraded CPU, but it is not certain which one Apple will go for, but we do know it will not be the same used in the iPhone 5S. Screen size will stay the same, although it is looking highly likely that it will sport a Retina display. This will also mean a larger battery is needed, which in turn will make it slightly thicker.
We do not expect any other changes, and so the Nexus 7 2 and the Kindle Fire HDX 7 will be great alternatives. Both devices have upped their game in terms of hardware, and more importantly, display quality.
The new Nexus 7 sports a 1080p HD screen, 5-megapixel and 1.2-megapixel cameras, Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5GHz processor, 2GB of RAM and up to 9 hours battery life. The price starts at $229
The Amazing Kindle Fire HDX 7 comes with a 1920×1200 display, 2.2GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM, and improved battery life. All this for a cost from $229.
We know the current iPad mini is much more expensive, so we cannot see the second generation dropping its price by that much.
