If you are an Oracle customer, then you will be pleased to know that there is now an Oracle critical patch update for October 2013, which is said to cover almost all product users. What makes these updates so different is how Java is being patched at the same time as well.

It is certainly nice to see new Oracle security improvements, as 51 vulnerabilities are being resolved in Java alone, 50 of which affect Java Applets or Java WebStart. Most of you will be aware this is the plugin that allows Java to run on your web browser of choice.

The issues with Java saw a remote exploit, which meant it could be accessed without authentication. It is for this very reason why it was so important for this quarterly cycle to include patch updates for Java.

You can see a list of software that is covered by this October 2013 critical patch update, with a total of 15 products from Oracle. You are advised to apply these CPU fixes at your earliest opportunity.

Some of you might not be happy knowing these issues existed, and so felt there was no need to have Java installed. This would be good advice because if it is not needed, then get rid.
