If you thought that the growing digital market still wasn’t important compared to disc based sales, Sony has sent out a reminder that they will continue to push even harder with digital sales when the PS4 console is launched in November.
Despite the well-documented problems with the PSN launch of GTA V on PS3, Sony has announced this week that Rockstar’s game has officially become the biggest digital seller that the PSN has ever seen. GTA V has already broken the record set by The Last of Us, despite the fact that GTA V hasn’t even been out for a month yet.
It’s a clear sign that thousands of gamers are still willing to buy their games digital as opposed to physical and Sony will obviously see this as a big plus as we head into PS4 online gaming that will require a PS Plus subscription service for the foreseeable future.
Having said that, Sony also has a great deal of issues to solve between now and November 15, as it goes without saying that they don’t want a repeat of the PSN server issues that gave users so much hassle when trying to download a massive GTA V file online from Sony’s database.
Killzone Shadow Fall has already been confirmed to have a whopping 50GB install, so Sony really needs to make sure they are adequately equipped so that thousands of gamers will be able to head to the PS4 store and download the game swiftly without any problems whatsoever.
It’s going to be demanding on Sony, but consumers will expect this kind of service at the very least if they are to keep Sony’s digital business booming. We don’t expect GTA V’s new PSN record to be broken any time soon, but hopefully it will give Sony a wake up call that digital is still very much relevant in the consumer’s eyes.
