We’ve all seen reports the moment Intel’s new Haswell chip is used in a laptop there is an instant improvement, not only in performance, but battery as well. It’s the latter we are more interested in because we expect to see the 4th generation i-Series processor from Intel used in the upcoming 2013 MacBook Pro.
We can already gauge an idea of the sort of 2013 MacBook Pro battery boost we can expect to see with Haswell by looking at the 2012 MacBook Air compared to the latest model. Apple quoted a battery life of 7 hours for last year’s Air, compared to around 9 hours for the 11-inch and 12 hours for the 13-inch model from this year’s range, which makes use of Haswell.
Okay, these times are just a guide and vary depending on what you are doing, as these figures were for wireless web. However, if the 13-inch 2012 MacBook Air achieved 7 hours and the 2013 version 12 hours, then this would mean the 2013 MacBook Pro with Haswell could achieve around 10 hours, as its current figure is also around 7 hours.
We know there are other variables to consider with the MacBook Pro, as there is greater demand from graphics and the Retina display, which is why we believe this year’s Pro refresh will be a couple of hours less than the Air.
Having said that, we could be wrong and Apple could squeeze even more life out of the 2013 MacBook refresh because of the addition of Mavericks, which is said to feature enhanced technologies.
2013 MacBook Pro with Mavericks will get even more from its battery because it will come with a host of power saving features, while also boosting responsiveness. Apple has yet to outline how this technology works, but with OS X Mavericks GM being released a couple of days ago, we don’t expect it will be long for us to learn more.
With the 2013 MacBook Pro coming with Haswell and Mavericks, it is clear there will be a huge focus on battery life, while not compromising on performance.
