One game that we were expecting to see an update on at the Tokyo Game Show but didn’t, was The Last Guardian. The elusive, but still very beautiful PS3 title has been missing from the headlines for many months, but Sony has been doing their best to make sure that fans know the project is still very much relevant.
The good news, is that there is no danger whatsoever that The Last Guardian is going to be cancelled. Sony has been quiet on providing information, but at the same time very tactful in their choice of words when they actually do discuss the game.
This is all mounting up for one obvious reason: The Last Guardian is soon going to be announced as a PS4 exclusive, as it would make no sense whatsoever for the game to still release on current-gen PS3 hardware. Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida has even hinted about this in a recent interview, carefully selecting his words when he tells GameIndustry that the game is currently being ‘re-engineered’.
That sounds to us like the team over at Team ICO are transferring all of the assets over to PS4 from PS3 and that is the sole reason why we haven’t had any official updates on the game. We also hope that the term reengineering also suggests that The Last Guardian is being rebuilt from the ground up, meaning that the game should look as beautiful as ever on the PS4 hardware.
You can view some very interesting comments from Yoshida through this link, especially a portion where he even references previous comments from Jack Tretton on how the game was on ‘hiatus’. This isn’t the case according to Yoshida though, even going as far to say as Tretton’s comments were ‘misleading’.
At least we know the game is definitely coming out at some point. We have a feeling that Sony will announce something sooner or later and when they do – the wait is going to be well worth it. Give us your thoughts on the long development time for this beautiful game.
