We have some interesting new developments for Zelda fans to take in to consideration now and it could be deemed as bad news depending on how you like your Zelda gameplay experience to be. The latest update on Zelda: A Link Between Worlds was shown at a new Nintendo Direct event, confirming some big changes to the gameplay mechanics when exploring dungeons.
We all know what happens when you enter a new dungeon on a Zelda game. You look for the big chest and it usually requires the use of an item that you acquired in the previous dungeon. It’s an old formula, but Zelda veterans love it and keep coming back for more.
With the upcoming Zelda game on 3DS however, Nintendo will be taking the brave step in mixing up this formula considerably. We can tell you that players will now have the option of ‘renting’ a selection of major weapons and tools in the game (for rupees), from a new shop that will become available.
It will give the player the option to explore whichever dungeon he or she wants from the early stages of the game, and not have to go through the streamlined process that we have seen in previous Zelda games.
We’ve seen a lot of positive feedback from fans who commend Nintendo for trying something new, but we’ve also seen plenty of negative responses from those who believe that it could ruin the whole formula of Zelda – even some going as far to say as they won’t buy A Link Between Worlds if it happens.
From our point of view, we wouldn’t mind seeing something new. The idea of non-linear Zelda gameplay is interesting and should actually be viewed as a big step forward in keeping things fresh. We’re sure Nintendo would have thought long and hard about making this step before announcing, so perhaps we should wait until the game is out before bashing Nintendo left, right and centre.
