We have some good news for PS3 users now, as Sony has finally decided that the time is right for another official firmware update to be released. Depending on your region, PS3 update 4.50 is now live and we’re very pleased to report that it isn’t the usual minor update which only improves stability and security.
This update actually adds some new functionality to the XMB and your PS3 system, so it should be an update that everyone will appreciate. It’s also a great reminder that Sony still intends to keep the PS3 system updated with new features, despite the fact that we’re almost ready to enter a new era of gaming with the PS4.
As far as we’re aware, this update is now live in the US, but still may take some time for it to appear for EU PS3 gamers. We’ve had to endure many months of security updates without new features, but now Sony has somewhat made up for this with the following notable changes inside 4.50:
– Auto download of system software updates has been expanded to support all PSN users.
– Auto download support of purchases made on the Web Store will be made available to all PSN users.
– New options for trophy privacy settings allow users to set which trophies are visible.
– Data can now be transferred from PS3 to PS Vita using wi-fi and ethernet connection.
Automatic system software updates is the biggest addition we can see, as previously this was a feature that was exclusive to those with a PS Plus membership. Now the feature is available for everyone to use and it will ensure that you can install the latest updates without having to wait hours before playing your favorite games.
The trophy privacy change is interesting, but is there perhaps a great need to hide trophies away from other users? Although not mentioned in the notes, we wonder if the PS3 update to 4.50 will improve connection issues when trying to get into GTA Online.
PS Vita users are also included in the PS3 update, with Sony making it easier than ever to transfer data between systems, now without the need for a data cable which is fantastic. Lots of positives to take from this update, let’s hope that Sony has more new functionality lined up for the PS3 in the months to come.
What would you like to see (other than cross-game chat) in the next major PS3 update?
