PS4 digital assurances after GTA V problems

If you decided to pick up a digital version of GTA V on PS3 via the PlayStation Network, you are probably relieved that the server and error code issues are behind you, although perhaps a bit disappointed that the game appears to run slower than those using the physical version.

It’s no secret that Sony ran into a lot of problems with the digital copy and it’s obviously an event that they will not want to revisit any time soon. Gamers expected a flawless launch when buying direct from home, but sadly it didn’t come.

With the switch over to PS4 happening very soon and Sony’s big push on digital content, does it perhaps insert a new element of doubt that these server and error code issues will still be a problem on PS4 when users start hammering away with their free content as part of PS Plus subscriptions?

It could turn out to be a real problem for Sony if the infrastructure doesn’t approve, but the company has been keen to stress that these issues won’t be a problem when the PS4 arrives. PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara has been speaking at Eurogamer Expo last week and admitted that downloading games from the PSN can be a ‘tedious process’.

He added that the service still isn’t perfect, and stated that file versions of game versus the disc version should perhaps need to undergo further Q&A testing before going live. At the same time, he reassured gamers by saying that through heavy investment, the service will be improved ten fold by the time the PS4 network is up and running.

With Sony making it mandatory for online gaming to need a subscription, it goes without saying that the company cannot afford any slip ups. Xbox Live is generally praised for its stability so hopefully we won’t see a repeat of the problems that plagued the digital launch and still continues to trouble those who are not playing on disc.
