Plans for the makers of Nest thermostat to go ahead with a smoke detector called Protect sounds like it could be a great lifesaving offering from the company, as former Apple executive Tony Fadell is said to be developing a connected smoke detector in line with its Nest Learning Thermostat. According to sources this device could be on the market this year, although we understand this may not be initially available with a subscription plan for monitoring alerts.

While we are still in the dark about the specifics the idea is to develop this to go with the Nest Learning Thermostat and Apple Insider presume this come with plenty of sensors, as well as new advanced technology.

This new product could contain a subscription monitoring service along with connectivity to the Nest thermostat with additional next-generation hardware like motion sensors. While we are yet to receive any confirmation of when this will actually arrive, rumours suggest it could be as early as the end of the year.

This could be another welcome addition to the company’s line-up and some feel a smoke detector is the next logical step for Nest. The second-generation thermostat came out about a year ago with enhanced functionality and a marginal redesign retailing at around $250.

With this in mind, some consumers suggest Nest should also branch into switches, connected outlets and lights, so do you want to see the smoke detector idea come to fruition?
