Today has certainly crept up fast because it seems like yesterday when we reported that Microsoft was to hold a Surface event on September 23, 2013. We can now tell you the event is over and the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 have been unveiled and the upgrades do look rather impressive.
Surface 2 vs. Pro 2 for price and performance – It has been known for a while that Microsoft was to do away with the name RT and would simply call its successor the Surface 2, and we can already see a number of improvements have been made, and with a bit of luck some lessons have been learned about the mistakes made with the RT.
The Surface 2 specs are a NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor allowing the tablet to run apps at a much faster rate, while offering more than 10 hours battery life playing videos. The Full HD 10.6-inch display also offers 1080p video playback, 3.5-megapixel camera Windows RT 8.1 for improved multitasking and smoother operation. The Microsoft Surface 2 price is to start at $449 for the 32GB version, although no price has been given for the 64GB model.
Surface Pro 2 specs are obviously far better than the device above, and as such helps to close the gap even more between the laptop and the tablet – well that is the hope. It comes with the latest Haswell i5 1.6GHz processor and so will be able to run a full version of the Microsoft Office suite. You have the choice of 4GB and 8GB of RAM, Full HD display and 75 percent improvement to the battery life when compared to the original Surface Pro, which as we know was one if its weaknesses. As for the Surface Pro 2 price this will start at $899 for the 64GB version, again no price for the 64GB model.
What concerns us is the fact the Surface RT and Pro successors will cost $100 more when released. It is like Microsoft has not learned from mistakes made from the original versions.
The Surface 2 and Pro 2 release date will be October 22 in multiple countries, and so nice to see Microsoft has learned the lesson of a better release schedule. For more details visit Microsoft.
