The plot continues to thicken with Deep Down, as we have yet another twist to tell you about after recently hearing that the PS4 exclusive would be an online RPG game. You may not like hearing this, but Capcom has now revealed that Deep Down is going to be a free-to-play game, joining the same group of developers and publishers to recently go down this route.

The free-to-play aspect was confirmed at the Tokyo Game Show in Japan, with Capcom due to announce official details shortly. At the moment, the only solid information we have is a Tweet by Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida – although Capcom has already disclosed hints about a beta.

It looks like the first playable Deep Down opportunity for the public will be available when the PS4 console launches in February 2014 for Japanese consumers. Capcom has said that the PS4 beta of Deep Down should be available at launch – presumably meaning that a UK and US beta will be happening shortly afterwards.

Not everyone is going to be happy with the free-to-play format of the game though. It essentially means that heavy monetization is coming, which could raise a few alarm bells from those who have previously kept an eye on Capcom’s past DLC tactics.

It also raises the interesting thought of needing a PS Plus subscription on PS4 in order to play this game. Sony did however say that some F2P games wouldn’t need PS Plus on PS4, so we’ll have to wait and see if Deep Down is included in this bracket or not.

As we await more details, give us your initial reaction to Deep Down becoming free-to-play. Is this is a positive for you, or a massive let down?
