We have known for a while that work has already begun on a Surface 2, as NVidia’s CEO had already confirmed his company was working with Microsoft on the second generation Surface device. Well, it seems as if we do not have that long to see just what Microsoft has been working on thanks to an upcoming event.
The date for the Microsoft Surface 2 launch event has now been made available, and it will fall on September 23. It does seem as though September is the month for events, not only did we have IFA, but also today’s Apple event and the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Microsoft Surface press invites have now been sent out where we expect to see several new devices from the range. Because the Surface RT has not done as well as Microsoft had expected, it looks as though the RT will be dropped from the name of the new version, and will just be called Surface 2, which is the model NVidia is said to be working on.
We also expect news on the Surface Pro 2, which is expected to come with a host of new features, with the most important being the new Haswell processor. Not much is known about these devices, but some rumors suggest the Surface Pro 2 specs will not only include the improved processor, but also 8GB of RAM and improved battery life thanks to Haswell.
As for the new Surface 2 and Surface Pro release date, we will just have to take a guess, but we can tell you that the RT was released in October 2012 and the Pro model in February 2013. However, we do not expect Microsoft to follow the same release pattern because it will be important to make both new devices available at the same time, and not just to North America.
What expectations do you have and will Microsoft be able to come back fighting with these second-generation Surface models? The biggest factor will be the Surface 2 and Surface Pro price range, as this was one of the biggest issues that caused poor sales, and so Microsoft needs to get this right from day one.
