We were very surprised last week when Google announced that the next version of their Android mobile OS was going to be Android 4.4 KitKat, because we had assumed Key Lime Pie would be next. However, we are not shocked about the possibility of some new hardware to go with it.
Each time a new version of Android has been released so has a new piece of hardware, this happened with Android 4.1 with the release of the Nexus 7 last year. 4.2 gave us the Nexus 4 and 4.3 made way for the 2013 Nexus 7 just over a month ago.
Predicting Android 4.4 KitKat Release Date – While there has been no announcement as to when 4.4 will be released, we can look at the release pattern above along with some of the rumors regarding the Nexus 5.
The reason we mention the Nexus 5 is because we believe this will be the first device to run Android 4.4 KitKat, and should be released in October. Okay, we know this will be a month earlier than the Nexus 4 was released, but most rumors do point to October.
According to an interesting article on GottaBeMobile they believe a new Nexus 10 could also see a release at the same time, which would make it a threesome in terms of October releases.
Nexus Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades – Even though the Nexus 5 and new Nexus 10 has yet to be announced, it is rather obvious they would benefit from the upgraded software first, with current Nexus devices being updated in November.
As for non-Nexus devices we expect Samsung will upgrade their Galaxy S4 and Note 3 first, but after that it is too hard to predict.
For those who are not convinced that there will be a Nexus 5 (see render) release sporting KitKat, then check out this recent commercial from Google. Having said that, this could be the new Nexus 4 2013 model instead?
