When it comes to the best sports saloon, many of you will agree that the BMW 3-Series takes the trophy home, but The Japanese do not want the German’s to have it all their way and so believe their new hybrid Lexus has what it takes to depose its nemesis.
Lexus has already tried such a thing before, but without much success, so what makes this time around any different? Their most recent attempt was to try and outdo the 3-Series in the diesel department, but we all know how terribly Lexus failed and so this time believes it will be the hybrid that will get the job done for them.
In an interesting article from Car Magazine Online there is a BMW 320d vs. Lexus IS300h showdown, but how good is the third generation model from Lexus? They need to do a good job because getting the fleet market on side is very important, and they believe low-emissions is the way to go, although we do know there are some clean-diesels that can outperform hybrids in terms of mpg figures.
However, the new Lexus IS300h, which is their hybrid model is much cleaner and offers greater performance and more mpg than the BMW 320d, which as you know is diesel powered.
The Lexus specs include a 2.5-litre engine pushing out 178 horsepower, which works in conjunction with a 141bhp giving a combined power output of 220bhp. Compare this to the 320d, which pushes out 181bhp, although it is worth remembering this vehicle is much lighter than the IS300h.
This becomes evident when looking at their 0-62 mph times, with the Lexus doing it in 8.3 seconds and the BMW 7.4 seconds. You’ll need to read the complete review and find out those all important BMW 320d mpg and Lexus IS300h mpg figures, and it is clear to see this will be a fight worth winning because of the huge rewards.
